So all the One X enhanced games if to run similarly enhanced on S will need a new version with assets at 1440p ? Otherwise will just be One games upscaled or higher frame rate ?

Yes, that's right. It's only the OG Xbox and Xbox 360 games that get resolution enhancements on XSS. If any Xbone S games have dynamic resolution then they should max out on XSS.

Yeah, that's probably no real reason to leave it in standby unless you were downloading games. The cold boot time is around 20 seconds and the games will be in quick resume mode so just another 10 odd seconds to get playing again!

Dirt 5 sounds like a mess going by that Ars article. Seems like an odd pick for the first Series X press gameplay demo.

I think these early games will all be a mess. :p Nearly all are cross-gen so graphics won't be next-gen spectacular and I don't expect (m)any to be using the Velocity Architecture either.

GameSpot have some 4K footage of DiRT 5 on XSX.

And some more of a different map from Press Start. Map load times are way too long so it's a certainty it's not using Xbox Velocity Architecture due to the cross-gen nature of it.

Surprised they keep making Gears games, I seem to recall the original was quite good fun but I played the latest one on PC and it was pretty terrible.

I thought Gears 5 was the second best in the series, after Gears 3. The graphics were pretty amazing - great textures and even greater particle effects. I still think it's better than Halo. :p

Digital Foundry provide better analysis of DiRT 5. The 120Hz mode is dynamic resolution with an upper limit of 1440p which it mostly sticks to. There are rare drops to 1080p and very rare drops to 90fps at the lowest.

I think with DiRT, there are simply too many platforms to cater for. Which means they won’t necessarily use the unique tools available to each. Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5, PC, Google Stadia. So it’s like letting each platform brute force everything without special optimisation like Xbox Velocity Architecture or Variable Rate Shading, etc.

i dont think there is any point getting this console if you already have a capable Gaming PC due to the fact that all xbox games come out on pc

That would be my dream scenario. But I still have a great fondness for games of the Xbox 360 era and many of them are not available on PC. The only glimmer of hope I can see is when they bring XCloud to Windows 10. That might be a way to play Viva Pinata, Gears 2 and 3 without buying an Xbox. But I suspect that might still only be in 720p resolution. Which I'm sure all PC gamers would barely tolerate. :p It's going to take a year or so to upgrade the XCloud blades with Series X. Can I wait that long? Will that mean 4K streaming becomes viable?

I think I'd rather just pay me £400 and buy Series X which will last 6 years or more.

Some good videos coming out now. Gears 5 looks great.

Out of curiosity, what do you guys do with your old consoles?

My PS3 is normally in its box, which is where it got put in 2014 when I got the PS4. But I have been playing on it lately.
My PS4 Pro will also sit in its box, I'm not sure who would want to buy it with the PS5 having BC.
My PS4 and Xbox One I gave away to family.

May have been covered but is native 1440p support confirmed for the XSX?

No upscaling/downscaling but support from devs to optimise games for 1440p/60+ displays?

What difference would it make though if it's downscaled from 4K? It'll look cleaner on a smaller resolution display - free anti-aliasing. I can only see them doing 1440p if it was in a specific game mode like 1440p60 instead of 4K30.

It’s not about denying PS5 players the Bethesda games. It’s about getting those PS5 players to buy an Xbox Series X|S as well or using Game Pass on Xcloud. So everyone can play... in a fashion!

On the plus side they can now concentrate coding exclusively for Direct X and not have to share time and resources to PS5, this can only be good and they could make use of series s/x specific features

Not only GNM(X) for PS5 but they won't have to arse about with Vulkan and Linux for Google Stadia either.

I really hope Uplay+ comes to Xbox and maybe as part of Game Pass as well. I don't understand why Ubisoft haven't introduced their equivalent to EA Play on consoles already. Unless it's because they always planned to side with Amazon Luna. They have a Ubisoft channel on there with a lot of games. What a bummer.
