At only 50" you are only just able to resolve 4k at 3 feet. 8k would be pointless for a screen that small unless you're 1 foot away!

I dunno, I can see the pixels making up text in Windows. Not really noticeable when gaming as I sit a bit further back but aliasing is still janky at 4K and text could be even crisper. Like iPhone crisp. I like the way the image on an iPhone looks like it's painted on to the screen, I want to experience the same thing on a TV. Maybe I need OLED TV instead. Or 8K! I think a 5K iMac at 27" is pretty close to that feeling.

LOL, I did have some of you with that random instagram pic of the gent in front a big TV. I think he's using 4:3 whereas my TV is not nearly as tall being 16:9 but I'm still pretty much the same distance away.

Let me start again.

I'm not saying anything about next gen games running at 8K. My post said about the possibility of running Xbox 360 games at 8K.
As for 4K60 next gen, I don't see why not. Developers will have new tools at their disposal like Variable Rate Shading, Variable Refresh Rate as well as old ones like dynamic resolution and temporal AA. It might not be native 4K60 on paper but only Digital Foundry will be able to tell.

I'm not 100% sure but doesn't the Xbone use Windows 8 and now 10 as its core? I think the Series X will be using Game/Core OS which is the next generation Windows. So it should be quicker in that regard but then there's whatever UI they lay on top of it.

But it will have to be snappy if you can have three games paused simultaneously and do all the usual things like capture video.

I'm beginning to think it's a given that Microsoft or Sony or both will try to chase after the esports crowd. If you can get them away from spending £500-£600 on a PC that will play CS:GO, Fortnite, etc. and in to your ecosystem then it will be a bonus for them. If they support Fortnite with a keyboard and mouse, I am guessing it will pretty much run at 1440p120 or even 4K120 and there's your high frame rate as well. Many might just be persuaded. A lot of course will depend on the developers. Can they get companies to port things like League of Legends, CS:GO, Hearthstone, etc. Can you even play them with a gamepad? And then on the downside, any £299 laptop can probably play those titles at 1366x768.

But using a keyboard and mouse whilst monging out on the sofa in front of the TV is hardly ideal.

Aye but k+m+Xbox setup could be used in place of a PC in bedrooms/studies/etc. I've seen a lot of comments about people loving the XSX hardware and wanting to build a gaming PC in a similar sized case. I suppose it depends on how people use a PC. An Xbox obviously can't replace it if you are there using Microsoft Word and such like. (I suppose with k+m support you might be able to run Office web apps if they include the Edge browser.)

I'll probably end up buying both consoles but this time I'll be regressing back to disc purchases instead of digital, where possible. This gen, I ended up double dipping - buying PS4 digital versions and Steam PC versions of some games (which makes the PS4 version kind of redundant as the PC can play it better) so it was a waste of money in the end. Only going to buy exclusives on the digital stores and as Sony is the only one keeping their exclusives on console, it'll probably be only SIE published stuff. Microsoft's stuff will be play on Game Pass, buy on Steam.

Are we going to be getting a new Xbox every 3 to 4 years now? It could be that a new model in the Series X will be out in 2023 and then Xbox One is dropped so that next-gen games don't arrive until then.
