Played The Ascent in co-op last night and it wasn't the best experience. Warping around a bit with lag and certain enemies failed to spawn which left us all scratching our heads for a while. Hopefully it'll improve though.

Who doesn’t use an arcade stick for fighting games? A bonus is that it’s the same layout for all consoles.

Anyone who got used to playing with a controller. There are plenty of top players to use as an example.

The Series X's controller is infinitely better for fighters, the DualSense's D-pad is shockingly bad!

In SF5's case, I'd hate the bumpers and triggers for hard kick / punch. I didnt mind the D-pad on the playstation controller.

Unfortunately SF5 isn't available on Xbox, but I've played just about every other fighter on the console and the bumpers/triggers aren't a detriment. It's widely accepted that the D-pad on the Series X controller is remarkably tactile for fighters, unlike the squishy D-Pad on the DualSense.

Series S does a decent job of maintaining 1080p/60, which is the limit of the TV it's connected to anyway. In that sense, it's no worse than the Series X version and far better than either the One S or One X version. I'm happy with that (and I expect that'll run true for quite a lot of Series S owners).

The console will serve it's purpose as an entry-level machine, the target audience isn't those concerned with graphical fidelity or performance. It's a cost-effective means of accessing the Xbox ecosystem. Young children or people looking for a secondary system will benefit most.

Yea it is a shame SFv isn’t on it, and I’m a little miffed that I sold the playstation - should have just kept it for that game alone.

Did it get any better? It was such a terrible game from launch that I dropped it after a few months.

It was such an enormous disppointment after SF IV.

So.. I’ve managed to buy a XSX today in the Argos drop and im looking at the most cost effective way to play Flight Sim. From what I understand it’s free with Game Pass (whatever that is). What is the difference between Live, Live Gold & Ultimate Game pass & will all of these give me FS for free?

Can I play FS online without any of these if I purchased the game outright or are these similar to PS Plus in that if you don’t subscribe you can’t play online?

Hard to say tbh, they certainly did turn it around in terms of characters and defensive options and even more offensive options, but the netcode is still the biggest downfall. I started slowly making my way up the ranking, hardly got to great heights but I was happy with a "high gold" making way to super gold. Unfortunately matchmaking (nothing to do with netcode) took quite long as the community here in Aus isn't as thriving as it is in other parts of the world, so it was hard for me to get a decent progression of matches. I'd often get my arse handed to me by someone much more skilled, or fight people a fair bit weaker than me.

From memory, I think SFIV also had a bit of a rocky start, I think with SFV it just took them longer to get it in a good spot.

I'm starting to lose patience with my series X. I've a small list of games growing now that I am unable to play. All 3 crash my series X and the console powers off before they ever load to the main menu.

I've tried the normal OS version, insider beta ring releases. Have tried different displays, different resolutions and refresh rates.

Tried a system factory reset, tried re-downloading games. Nothing fixes it. Reached our to MS support on twitter, they turned around and said contact the game studio(s).

Flight Sim and other games work fine.

I'm thinking of returning the console to very under it's warranty and trying to get my hands on another one.

I can't keep this as it is, never knowing if the next game I want to play will work or not?!

ultimate combines everything into one sub, e.g game pass, Xbox live gold.

Best bet is get ultimate, I presume you can get a free trial or some good deal as a new subscriber.

Xbox Live - the online service.
Xbox Live Gold - the subscription for the online service.

Game Pass - a game subscription service with an ever-changing catalogue of included titles.

Game Pass Ultimate - Combines Xbox Live Gold and Game Pass in to one subscription, covering Xbox, PC, and Cloud.

You can stock up on Xbox Live Gold on your account and then convert all remaining time on the subscription to Game Pass Ultimate. There's a thread in this board about it. That's your best route TBH. For around £120 you can get three years of Game Pass Ultimate. Even just looking through the last six months of this year, that will mean you're getting to play:
  • Flight Sim
  • The Ascent
  • Psychonauts 2
  • Back4Blood
  • Halo Infinite
  • Forza Horizon 5
  • Hundreds of games already in the service, plus other titles to be added over the coming months.
At that price it can't be beaten for value really.

The method I used was to buy and stack 2.5 years worth of XBOX Gold Live (XGL) and then the purchase the Game Pass Ultimate for the first month at one queenhead deal which in turn upgrades the 2.5 years worth of XGL to Ultimate (remember to disable auto-renew). That's the Ultimate subscription till April 2024 for 101 queenheads :)

oops, method already described above!

I would send it back and hope they give you a new one. If they test your unit, they’ll probably just turn it on and say nothing wrong and send it back. But I couldn’t live with that. Games aren’t supposed to crash on consoles, full stop.

It was curious watching your video though, you didn’t even get the full Ascent splash screen during boot, only a Game Pass logo. Never seen that before.

The Ascent is extremely buggy. I've had to dashboard it when I couldn't back out of a conversation, my friend has had it crash a few times.

The Ascent was fine for me in single player, though I did only put in around an hour so far. Co op was a bit of a mess though and had issues with crashes, missing spawns, bad save files, joining games etc. It could well be server load currently though.

Same I crashed to dash about three times, I was hosting my mate I was in CO-OP with didn't crash. Single player has been solid for me. Although some bugs like ICE 1 Chests not opening even though I have the relevant ICE level access. The sound in game seems a little all over the place too, looping and disjointed unfinished samples. It is a shame as I have been really enjoying it.

I would send it back mate for sure. I have had mine since February and not had any crashes on any game titles. The only one that has crashed to dash is The Ascent. Everything else has been fine.

Might be worth taking down the serial etc to see if they just resend it back to you, I imagine amazon would just replace it but not sure about Very and their returns policy.

Hope you get it sorted though.

I am guessing you have done a full console shutdown from the settings? Mine has crashed back to dash two or three times since launch, full shutdown fixed it.

Yea tried all manner of things, with no luck. A return has been arranged with Very. Only had the console since early June. Unfortunately thry can't offer a replacement due to stock, so if a fault is confirmed I get a refund and am back to hunting one down again! :(

I wouldn't send it back beacuse the consoles shutting down on 2 games that are known for being buggy and a Beta. I bet it's the game themselves causes the issue and nothing to do with the console. Get your money back on the games. Especially back for blood. Massive let down compared to Left4dead series.

You make a valid point but booting up The Ascent without its splash screen displaying is just weird in itself. It looks a bit like a GPU problem in my mostly-ignorant opinion.
