Your bad driving encounters

Let me guess, old person?

With one leg in the grave much less than one foot.

Someone should go CSI to see how fast the red car was going (still black cars fault though). Bet the other red car waiting at the give way point was kicking themselves for not getting out of there before the black car hit them.

Swift driver says she was under but close to the limit (30)

Some very rough calculations from the video using the length of the car as a guide to the distance travelled came out at 25.8MPH (average) - but I assume they were possibly braking over some of that distance - though an indicated almost 30MPH could be around 27MPH or so actual.

With the frame rate and so on of the video and how short a time it is moving on screen hard to be very accurate.

I like your idea of using the cars length as the measure. I tried it and got 10m travelled in 0.6125 for a average speed of 36.5mph. They were going a lot faster then the car going in the other direction.

I need to hook up my rear facing dashcam - I was doing a good 70 in the outside lane and the person behind me is literally 6 feet from my bumper with their phone propped up against their steering wheel mostly looking down at it... how are people this ******* stupid. They then followed me back to lane 1 and when we came to standing traffic I slowed up prematurely quite a bit to give myself room because I didn't know what they were going to do and they weren't prepared for it and had to use lane 2 to have enough room to stop - good thing traffic wasn't equally queued back in all lanes... no way they'd have stopped in time.

Had a bus driver a bit cross with me - don't think he realised his rear indicator wasn't working and by the time I was in a position to see the front one and put 1+1 together it was too late to sensibly stop and let him out.

I didn't bother with per frame accuracy, just a rough estimation - they were going quite a bit faster in the first half of the distance covered than the second.

Early this morning I was driving behind a small van which was behind another car, dawdling at 50 in a 60. When an opportunity arose for an overtake I gave the van driver about 3 seconds to make a move but they didn't so I made the move to overtake them both. However, just as my front bumper is inline with their rear he/she/it decides on the overtake after all . A bit of swear word induced braking by me saved us from a collision, we were so close I couldn't see the bumper of the van. I don't know what's worse, either they were so miffed that I was making the overtake and decided to risk the life of both of us, or they are such a crap driver they didn't look before manoeuvring.

This would have made some interesting dashcam footage but once I'd stopped and reached for the camera I discovered the damn thing was unplugged! I remember in the recent warm spell the heat had caused the camera's suction cup mount to fall from the window so I'm guessing this is when the cable must have popped out too. Damn.

Some people don't seem to pay much attention to what is going on around them - I had someone today pull out of a junction and then only notice me cue shock and horror face - fortunately I was already braking due to thinking another vehicle was going to pull out. Then just now had someone coming the other way wandering around more over my side of the road than their side which was a bit of a heart in mouth moment until they moved back over unfortunately neither came out well on dashcam.

Ironically then a bit further down the road to where someone pulled out on me, I stopped to let someone out of a junction as the car infront of me was turning in to it and they weren't paying attention at all and just sat there.

Oh and the guy tailgating me insanely close to the point I took a bit of a detour in the end to get away from him... just have no idea what [doesn't] go through some people's minds.

dawdling at 50 in a 60

Unless they are really dawdling with lots of drops below 50 that doesn't really bother me much - it is the people doing 40 in a 60 which drives me up the wall. I'm quite happy to sit behind someone at 50 as long as they are doing a good 50.

Bad night tonight, on the usual drive London to Bedford so M11, M25, M1.

Someone joining the M1 via lane merges, so I moved over to lane 2. They indicated and then pulled into lane 1 leaving them behind a lorry. I was going 5-10mph faster than them so didn't worry about moving further over - they finished pulling in and immediately carried on into my lane despite me being bang on level with them by this point. Must have assumed there was no one else using the road aside from the lorry maybe. I was braking hard by the time they'd committed to the move, so my bumper lining up to hit their rear corner when I put the horn on too. They carried on pulling out and drove off mildly faster and blinked their hazards. TBH it was such a close one I assumed they thought "**** him I'm pulling out", but maybe they just did not look at all.

Then later on went to pass someone dawdling in lane 2 and as I regained the speed I'd lost while they were in front of me slowing down, they drifted about 2-3 feet into my lane (3). That time I didn't bother with the horn and just held back as earlier incident was a bit close for comfort despite being well under control.

Plus the usual, someone doing 50mph in lane 3 of a 4 lane motorway so I pass them at my ideal 55 in lane 1, or someone pootling at 49mph in lane 1 and I go to pass them in lane 2 and they speed up til I can't pass. Just tons of people not paying any attention at all.

I agree 50 is my borderline value on a 60, I had morons galore yesterday, somebody doing 35 in a 50 so I overtook them, then someone else doing 30 in a 40 who finally got upto 40 just as it turned into a 50 (and then stayed at 40) . The standard of driving is just shocking, it used to be Derby and below that was the line for really bad drivers, but looks likes it's spread up north as well. I constantly see people pulling into gaps to small or causing me to slam on on roundabouts. I'd say on my 30 minute commute I normally see 3-4 near misses/bits of poor driving (and it's not usually me:D).

Wow, the impatience. Can understand overtaking on a NSL country road or dual carriageways, etc. but not a residential street.

Yeah, especially when I wasn't going particularly slowly, ~25 which I think was reasonable given the time of day & other traffic/parked cars/pedestrians - you can hear the tyres squeal at the end where he skids into the road on the right.

Oh really ?
Have to give that a go !!
My post might have been inspired by a van driver parked off my local high street, immediately next to a mini-roundabout, where one of the exits is obscured by buildings, blocking one half of the road. :p

Driving hack: if you bang your hazards on you can park stop absolutely anywhere you like.

Fixed.

Only blocking half the road is downright civilised compared to round here!
