Your current Fish tank Setups!

I have kept / do keep some of the same species in the past. Big fan if south american fish ironically considering where i'm located.

Have a few 20G breeders outside with apistogramma, blue & golden rams. Wild type female bettas in a pond where my gold tigerskin endler culls go.

Next step is a large community tank with discus. I want to do a discus, ram/apisto tank with rummy nose tetras but i need to renovate the livingroom first.

You're in probably one of the best places in the world for tropical fish keeping! I was in awe when I went to Chatuchak weekend market when I went to Bangkok, the variety of fish is stunning, I'd love to do a ray tank and the arowanas they have are simply stunning! I'd move to Thailand simply for the possibilities in fishkeeping :D

yeah been to that market a few times over the years and it's where i'll be going to get my discus but I live in chiang mai up in the north so it's a bit slim pickings when it comes to certain fish.

usually have to buy online and get them shipped which is a pain when you want something specific in small qty. I have bought so many rams to try and get breeding pairs which aren't balloon or long fin etc.

I'll get some decent pictures of mine soon.

I have 6 Stingrays and a Red Tail Golden Arowana.

I've just moved to a soil substrate and it means i can't be as slapdash with re-adding water as i was with the sand (also removed my powerhead in favour of a stronger pump so not able to pour over that to disperse.

Does anyone use a pump to re-fill their tank during water changes, if so what would you recommend? I've got a couple of 25L water containers so ideally would like to be able to fill those up and drop a pump in move the water up 1.5m from the floor to the tank. Have tried raising the containers and syphoning but its a pita and a python isn't going to work due to the tank location :(

Any reason for not refilling directly from the tap?

I gave up on buckets years ago and use a python hose. So much less hassle.

Pump wise, the limiting factor will be head pressure assuming the buckets will be lower than the top of the tank. Bigger is better basically.

I run tap water through an RMA filter when refilling. No need for chemicals then either as it takes out all the chlorine and other contaminants. Works out cheaper than buying prime etc.

You can use a small pond/fountain pump to take the water out.

Using a python is a big waste of water.

How is it a big waste of water? And no before you say, you don’t leave the tap running while the tank is emptying, that’s ridiculous. You can use the tap for a few seconds to establish a syphon if you want but even that’s not actually needed. I just do it the old fashioned way by filling the fat bit of the inlet tube and lifting it in the air and once it’s flowing dunking it back in the tank. No taps are actually needed to drain. The only water that flows goes back into the tank.

I use seachem safe (powdered prime), a £15 250g tub treats up to 240,000 litres. A tub lasts a couple of years. How does that compare to to a HMA filter?

our taps are a ridiculous design so getting seal on them seems nearly impossible unfortunately and apparently i'm not aloud to change them - otherwise your right, this would be the preferred method
I use the shower hose on my python, it’s thermostatic which makes things very easy and the temperature of the water it puts out very stable. We don’t have any mixer taps upstairs it would fit on either!

I just whip the head off which should be a standard connector on nearly all showers. You need an adapter to couple the two together but I just got one off eBay for a few £.

HMA filters are about £12 a year, or every 6 months if you change them then. You can also use it for drinking water and I use it to top the pond up without having to cup fulls of chems.

Also avoiding any chemicals is always the best way.

What is the guidance for changing filter sponges without ruining tank cycle?
I have a Fluval 307 which contains 2x three different filter sponges - do I change one of each, wait a month (or longer) then change the rest?

As above, why change them?

I’ve had mine in my 306 since it was new which must have been more than half a decade ago at this point. If not more.

I know I'm going to have to move again as the current house just isn't suitable but hoping in the future to keep Oscars. Want to make it as disabled friendly as possible though if I do. No carrying buckets of water etc.

I'll definitely want something with personality for sure, that said I watched a few videos on YouTube recently where a guy rescued a store bought lobster. That looked like a fun animal to keep. Again loads of personality.
