This will give you heart palpitations. You can smell the fear and rightly so. Honnold has so much self belief.

Its just stupidly dangerous and as much as everyone is praising Honnold in the comments, he shouldn't have done that.

You could tell that Midtbo was **** scared at many points, massively over-gripping everything and had no business being there. Honnold is a weird dude and he didn't seem to have any appreciation for the situation he had put Magnus in and how his blase attitude is not something that should be used to encourage people to solo climbs.

Honnold has been doing this for a long time and has no fear and probably climbs as well or better soloing as when hes on a rope. Magnus, not so much. The thing is, if Honnold did this with someone and they died I don't think he would even comprehend that he was a fault in any way. Hes just wired differently. Still soloing despite having a young kid.

Some of the head cam shots from Magnus had me worried just from the sound which made it seem like his foot had slipped in a few places. I don't think it did but that worried me.

I partially agree. I assume Honnold has climbed this route many times and initially with ropes till he knew every hold off by heart. Whereas Magnus did it blind so hats off to Magnus for his sheer skill and courage. As a non climber it really looked life and death stuff to me, but in Honnold's defence I think he truly believed Magnus would manage it or he wouldn't have taken him. I also felt Honnold was condescending toward Magnus during the climb in difficult sections which must have been very humiliating.

I would be more surprised if Honnold had climbed this with a rope at any point. Hes a very good climber but his entire claim to fame is his soloing. Hes got quite a dry sense of humour so I don't think he was being condescending, hes just very much on the spectrum and doesn't process fear and consequences like normal people do. If you haven't already, go watch "Free Solo" and you will get an idea about the sort of guy he is. Super nice but doesn't understand normal people and their motivations/fears.

Climbing is a weird sport where its generally very safe and just appears dangerous if you don't understand what is happening but soloing is super dangerous which is why Honnold says at one point "most of my friends who solo have died or drifted away". Probably because they eventually have too many responsibilities to be taking such a risk.

Magnus was one of the best climbers in the world and this is childs play for him on a technical level but soloing is 90% mental if its a climb you could easily do on a rope. You could see that Magnus was struggling at times and was breathing heavily and chalking up a lot which he wouldn't normally do.

Honnold definitely didn't think Magnus would fall but his attitude was far too casual and ignored the fact that most people don't solo for a reason. It just takes one bit of really bad luck and you can be the best climber in the world and still die on something easy. Fear does bad things to you and you don't want to be in a bad situation 200ft up a cliff.

What a load of ******.

About 50 years ago my father was out in one of the ME countries as a consultant. He was being driven around and he spotted what looked like a rubbish pile, so he told his assistant to make a note to get it cleared up. His hosts were extremely embarassed and revealed that it was where the migrant labourers lived.

"Risk being seen in all of your glory" - Never knew Carrey could be a superb speaker to that kind of level. Notched up a level in the kudos scale in my books, not that he wasn't up there anyways.
