this is a future proof board is it not? Its better than most boards out there????
Having build my new rig with this board i have a few questions since im kinda ignortant when it comes to the various technologies.
1) Should i install Intel Management Engine and if so what does it do?
2) Since i have a GTX460 is Lucid Virtu irrelevant to me?
3) Should i install the XFast land and Xfast USB software or is it just garbage?
4) Is the Extreme Tuning Utility any good and worth installing?
5) Should i install Instant Boot or does it not actually do much?
6) Do i have to register the board in order to be covered by the warranty?
Thanks
Got the board fitted saturday and overclocked today heres what i posted on the overclocking section:
Well i got my cpu overclocked to 4.6Ghz i think thats as far as im willing to go as the temps were getting into the high 70s when running intelburn test which i let run 50times.
I got the vcore set to auto (never went above 1.390v) and i let the bios do the overclock (auto overclock option).
I started at 4.0Ghz and then increased it by 200mhz every time till i got to 4.6Ghz.
Does this sound ok to you guys
Also i overclocked the memory, simply by choosing the xms option (i think thats its name) and now my memory is running at 1866
I love this board.
Can anyone confirn if this board and the Extreme7 have the USB charge on/off feature where you can charge iPods, etc when the machine is switched off?
My other question about this board is to do with layout of slots and the amount of room available. I am ultimately looking at going SLi or Crossfire but also have an Asus D2X PCI-e soundcard. I am going to need a board that can accommodate 2 graphics cards and the soundcard.
I don't want to use onboard sound as I use Dolby Digital encoding to output to my Denon amp.
Can confirm it does have the usb charge on/off feature.
Also... I am running CF x 6950. Not a lot of room if I'm honest. I literally just squeezed in my pciE soundcard.

Hmm that worries me. May I ask what slots you had the graphics cards in. Was there an opportunity to put them in other slots?
From the looks of that Xonar you have, it seems to be thinner than mine:

This is one of the reasons I have been leaning towards a G1 Sniper 2 with its onboard Creative. I need a DD encoding soundcard to output to my Denon amp. Hmmm
Tbh I don't want to put you off this board as it's fantastic. But that soundcard simply won't fit. I've heard the difference between myn and yours isn't a lot, so maybe change the soundcard?
Either way I'll take a picture for you if you like, but Like I said It's tight and I'm using the 2 slots the manual says to use.
A picture would be cool just to help me get an idea. Just want to confirm though, is that the Extreme4 you are using? I see the Extreme7 only has one PCI-e slot but the Ex4 has 2.
If I have to invest in a new soundcard to make it all fit, I can see me going for the Gigabyte G1 Sniper 2 just for the ease of it.
Is your soundcard in the bottom PCI-e slot rather than one of the small ones? The manual and stock photos make it look like there is so much room. If PCI-e slots 2 and 4 are used for the Crossfire as per the manual, are the two small ones (1 and 3) blocked?
Hmm I reckon the Extreme7 could work. Manual recommends using PCI-e 1 and 4 for graphics cards which, I think, could leave slot 3 (small PCI-e) free to get the soundcard in. Failing that it looks like it could go in 5 or 6 which are longer ones.
tbh I don't think they are PCI-E slots, just PCI, and this card is PCIE if I'm not mistaken? Also I don't think there is another viable slot to put it in.
