Z68 Extreme4 Gen3

Thanks mate Does the venemous X wobble for ya? Its a great cooler and the black edition which i will buy is just sexy but the wobble put me off a lot.Apparantly you can turn the cooler if using the 70lbs pressure option.

I just want it with the normal pressure and im still worried about the movement with pastes that form bonds.Other than that things look good so ill check the thread in a day and see if my worries can be dispelled as im itching to get my hands on it with the gen 3, 2500k, 16gb ram and a gtx 580! :D

Yeah i get a slight movement, I have tightened it a little and its not that bad, its not as bad as the Zalman i had running on my Q6600 :)

I am waiting for the 6 series Nvidia's to come out so i can buy a gtx580 lol

Just got two OCZ Vertex 3's in RAID, i am shocked at the speed :eek:

:O !! Thanks for that, I will probably buy a different cooler in the next few months... One that actually fits in the right way. Can anyone recommend a decent cooler for this board? (Price not too much of a worry as I want 4.6ghz - 5ghz).

edit: Managed to fit the asus xonar in that slot quite nicely :). Thank you very much again ! :)

Hi guys,

I guess all the owners might be a better source than the review site Ive been looking at...
Looking at reviews for this mobo you either find them to praise this board or say it's been the slowest of the Z68 pack...

Now... I build a SB rig for a friend with gen2 of this board and happily o/ced up to 5.2GHz for benches, 4.8GHz stable 24/7 and was really impressed with it.

Im finding hard to believe that in bit-tech test it didnt do so well...

Bit tech reviews are rubbish mate they obviously take backhanders to prop up asus boards etc,Take one look at almost all thier new z68 or p67 reviews and everytime all non asus boards get 285mb max reads on a intel 6gb port while low and behold all the asus boards have 500mb+.

There have been confused people like myself adding in the comments section about why this is wrong when they all get 500mb just fine on the intel ports.

No reply from bitch tech at all i simply ignore every review they do now:mad:

Thanks for the info.
Would anyone mind sharing a 6gb port test results with their SSD here?

OCZ Agility 3 60GB on Intel port.

Hi guys,

I'm just trying to catch up on all the advancements of the last couple of years (been away and out of the loop). Just wonder if you can offer a bit of advice?

I'm looking to build a new system now and was just wondering if it is worth opting for one of these motherboards in the hope of future-proofing, say over the Asus P8Z68-V currently on offer?

I presume the new ivybridge procs would require a new chipset to get the most out of them, thus negating the benefit of the PCI-E 3 ports in these? Will they likely even run at full speed?

I've had a read through but can't find the info.

Cheers,

Adam

No they won't.

Yes they will run x32. (It's a proper Gen 3 board)

just bought one of these beauties along with a 2500K and 8GB Ram

My question is that Im going to be fitting my 2 6950's on this board, and noticed there is a hard drive power connector on the board, it states to connect one to the board if using 2 cards or more.

Is this just a question of having to use a spare 4 pin molex connector off the PSU?

Yes

Im probably going to have to invest in a new PSU soon.

Can you or anyone recommend a decent one?

Under £100 preferably.

Few questions

What PSU are you using now?

What amps rating does your PSU have on the 12v rail?

Are you planning to run it 24/7?

How much overclocking are you going to use on the CPU, extra volts?

Are you planning to use a lot of Fans, Hard drives etc

6950s in Crossfire under max load draw about 329W or ~28amps on the 12v rail.

Do you need a modular design or can you hide the cables?

If I would be buying one now I would be looking at the most energy efficient PSU gold as I pay the energy bill.

You can use a power calculator below. I would add extra watts to be on the safe side if I am O/C system

I've just built up my new system using this motherboard (after sending back the MSI Z68A-GD55-G3 I originally had) and it's fantastic. The in-build overclocking profiles are quite overzealous with the voltages (the 4.4GHz overclock sets the VID to 1.377v!) but other than that, it's fantastic. Everything works as expected and after applying a manual overclock (CPU Multiplier set to 44, VID set to 1.32v) it's running like a dream.

Considering I've always seen ASRock as a company who produced cheap, rubbish motherboards I'm very pleasantly surprised and will recommend them after this experience :)

Morning,

Ill take a look this evening but my i cant see an issue, i have both fans on (fan on memory side, touching top of RAM).

If you want the one fan then you should be fine :)

any update mate? im tempted to go ahead and get the venemous x black edition and apache black 120mm now if u can confirm i can mount fan on other side avoiding ram.

ty :)

What PSU are you using now?

Hiper 880w ( HPU-4M880-XX ), heard some horror stories on Hiper's but i've had this quite awhile and not had any issues, touch wood.

What amps rating does your PSU have on the 12v rail?

from what I can see it says :
+12V 1 (± 5%)
1 ~ 18 A

+12V 2 (± 5%)
1 ~ 18 A

+12V 3 (± 5%)
1 ~ 18 A

+12V 4 (± 5%)
1 ~ 18 A

-12V (± 10%)
0 ~ 0.8 A

Are you planning to run it 24/7?

no

How much overclocking are you going to use on the CPU, extra volts?

Im aiming for around 4.5ghz, not sure on the voltage yet.

1 x 2 TB WD Hard Disk, 2 x optical writers, and probably 2 x SSD drives.

preferably as I prefer a true modular psu.

Tried using the quote crap, it never worked properly lol.

Does the BIOS on this board have a problem with usb keyboards and mice?

I try to enter the CPU multi in the box and all it puts in is 16, no matter what number i type. I have to select the OC presets if I want to overclock.

Is there something i missed here?

Also the UI feels a little laggy with the mouse. Its been updated to v1.10.

Any help is welcome.

You should only update the bios if you were having problems with your mouse.
If it's running ok and you update to the 1.1 bios it can introduce problems.

I solved the problem with the keyboard. The back usb2 sockets don't like the razor blackwidow in the bios. I plugged the keyboard into my case front usb2 and the keyboard worked great in bios.

This board don't feel as rock solid as my old p5k premium :(. This just feels flakey, hoping it gets thru its boot process without a black screen freeze.
