Z68 Extreme4 Gen3

Not sure which slots you mean are PCI. We talking on your board or on the Ex7?

on the Extreme4 Gen 3... There are other slots, but they are only PCI slots, not PCI-E. As the soundcard / graphics cards are PCI-E, I cannot use the other slots that would give it more room.

Won't the DX fit in the 1st pci-e x1 slot above the 1st video card ?

Nope as I have the 1st 6950 in that top slot, the other is in the slot just underneath PCI2 (not PCIE2).. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it though. Here are some more pics:

does that bottom gfx card get hot with the sound card right under the fans?

I see you have 2 6950's like myself, what was BF3 like for you on ur current system? as it was crap for me in crossfire but better in single card config.

Im running a old Q9450 chip and was thinking of going to a I5-2500K, would it be worth it?

The bottom grahpics card doesn't get any hotter than the top, maybe 3 - 5 degrees difference, but under heavy gpu load they don't seem to go above 60 in temperature! So at the moment it's ok, we'll see once the dust sets in. As of now I can't do anything about it, and the sound card is absaloutely fantastic compared to onboard, so looks like I'm stuffed.

Anyway, CF6950 under the i5 4.5ghz clock is fantastic. I was getting rock solid gameplay and no noticeable microstuttering or fps lag etc. Really a great gaming experience. Had everything maxed out and wonderful. I think the avg fps was around 40, but tbh at the times I had the fps counter up even in some heavy firefights I saw it at 70fps... But like I said gameplay felt very smooth and very happy with them.

have you done the shader unlock like me ?

I know what you mean about silky smooth frame rate, but unlike yourself I get it with just a single card in that beta lol.

frame rate with crossfire for me seemed to be half what the single card was doing, I was running the Preview 2 drivers aswell.

The small slots just above and below where you have your 1st graphics card are also pci-e slots not pci , you should have been able to stick the DX in the top one but having seen your photos I see it's probably blocked by the fan on your cooler.

I've just ordered this board to replace my duff Z68A-GD55-G3 - what quirks should I be aware of? I know the Extreme7 had an issue with Creative PCI sound cards but that's been fixed, does the Extreme4 have any of these issues? (I've got a PCI X-Fi XtremeMusic...)

Cheers :)

I cant see why the gen3 is any different to the standard version apart from colour scheme and the PCI-E switches, but I did use a PCI X-fi xtrememusic in a Asrock Z68 extreme4 without any issues.

I noticed your using 2 bridges, I didn't think you needed to anymore with 2 bridges? 1 being sufficent>?

I've looked in the manual and on the board there is no slot 'hidden' by the cpu fan and there is only a PCI slot in the middle between both cards

Hi

I put together one of these with a Thermalright Venomous X and 4 sticks of Kingston RAM last night.

It fits perfectly although any RAM with higher heat spreaders than the Kingston definitely won’t fit.

Cant wait!

Hmm i might be screwed as i have 16GB of Gskill Ripjawx CL8 and i wanted the Extreme 4 gen 3 and venmous X black edition or CNPS9900 MAX LED.

Could someone advise if the above will fit? Im worried now that the ripjawx wont as they are a little higher than the kingston ram i think he talks about. Is there room on the venemous x and gen 3 to have the fan on the opposite side of the ram so it sucks air through the cooler ?

Morning,

Ill take a look this evening but my i cant see an issue, i have both fans on (fan on memory side, touching top of RAM).

If you want the one fan then you should be fine :)

Yes just the one apache black 120mm on the venemous X mate with all four dimms. The gskill is deffo a little higher than the kingston and you say your venemous x already touches the kingston ram? Is that the flat ram with no fins at all as if so it does not sound good if i ever wanted dual fans.

But just one fan is fine too as i prefer a fan on the other side of the cooler due to the way fans work better when pulling air through an object rather than pushing so i always wondered why people front mounted cooling fans near ram slots.

Props for fast reply also im a few weeks off getting the mobo so dont be going out of your way as i can wait a few days.

No probs, always happy to help.

Yes the Kingston Ram has no fins whatsoever http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-094-KS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1517.

One thing you can do with these venousX coolers is just move the fan up slightly. The way that the fans clip on is different to what i am used to, you could as i say move the clips up slightly. Ill take a look tonight and see how far you could move them up the cooler, the only other thing you then have to be careful of is the height of the cooler. I had to remove the actually fan holder from my stacker side panel. When i put the side on it just brushes the top of the cooler!

Im still stunned at how quiet the new rig is, very impressed with the CPU cooler for the price, great temps and quiet.

Cheers

Thanks mate Does the venemous X wobble for ya? Its a great cooler and the black edition which i will buy is just sexy but the wobble put me off a lot.Apparantly you can turn the cooler if using the 70lbs pressure option.

I just want it with the normal pressure and im still worried about the movement with pastes that form bonds.Other than that things look good so ill check the thread in a day and see if my worries can be dispelled as im itching to get my hands on it with the gen 3, 2500k, 16gb ram and a gtx 580! :D
