Z68 Extreme4 Gen3

cool, i flashed the bios straight away mate, worth doing before you start to much

Did you have any problems before doing so?

and a question for the floor;

If I put a D2X in either of the other x16 slots (GPU will be in top slot, natch) will I lose any performance from GPU as neither run at x16? I've only had this sound card running in a full x16 slot before in an x58 rig

to be honest when i build a pc i do a dummy install with windows7 and just dont activate. i then flashed from within windows, because if it bricks it then it gets RMA'ed anyway :D best to stress it at the start while you have the 7 days to return. the flash went fine. looking on the site you can do 3 different ways, old skool floopy, use the bios tool, or windows. Windows is always gonna be the easiest, but some say the most risky. However i have never bricked a machine doing it that way

There are only 2 PCI slots lol

PCI-E 3 is only x1, do you mean PCI-E 4 ?

It only states PCI-E 4 is x 8 when PCI-E 2 is in use, could be worth trying it you never know ;)

I'm pretty sure pcie4 is only physically wired up for x8, if you look in the slot you will see the contacts are only on the front (nearest the backplate) half so it won't work at x16 no matter what other slots you use.

And really the d2x I'm pretty sure its only x1 so either use the slot above the first graphics slot or stick it in the bottom x4 slot where I have mine and it works fine :)

i guess i should just leave it where it is then. why do they make things complicated, or possibly complicated :D

so im in slot one, and your saying only the top 2 are useable

Me? All I'm saying is that saying is that pcie4 only has half the teeth(contacts) inside the slot so it's physically only capable of running at x8 or lower I'm not sure what would happen if you put an x1 device in there but i suspect the top slot would switch to running at x8 as it cant run at x15 and supply x1 only to the 2nd x16(size) slot.

and the picture you've posted is an extreme 7 which has an nf200 chip extra and allows full x16 on both the first two pcie x16 size slots

the US3 ports are just sat there in case i need them, to be fair i have the 2 at the back and dont currently have any USB3 products. i have ordered a converter to make the front USB ports go straight to the mobo. As those cables that come with the case are pass through ones and don't work with my nice neat cables ;)

Be careful with the 'converter' mate as theres a reason why Corsair didn't give us them as standard. I read on their forums that they didn't make it the standard motherboard connectors as certain manufacturers have different implementation designs of USB3 and it can affect performance, hence why they stuck with the simply external USB port connectors.

ok well i have not ordered yet, just bookmarked, i might leave it for now, as i really dont have any USB3 products so the two at the back of the mobo should do me.

its my only fault with the case, as i assume they want me to run that cable out the back of my case

Well after giving this board a great review it appears I may need to RMA it.
I have just received a GTX580 and as it is a triple slot card i have had to move my Asus Xonar PCI sound card down to the second PCI slot nearest the bottom of the board.

Upon rebooting it shows the soundcard in the device manager but it just will not install it. I have removed the drivers and reinstalled but nothing. When i put the card back in the top PCI slot, it works and installs perfectly.

Then i just thought ok i can live without the Xonar, i will install the onboard card. This installs perfectly, it detects when i plug in my speakers etc but absolutely no sound comes out! I can see music is playing as the volume graphic moves up and down etc with the music but its completely dead.

I have tried upgrading to the 1.10 bios but can't think of anything else to try. I also tried the front connectors, still nothing.

Any ideas?

I have had my ex4 gen3 a little while now but i have only just decided to plug in ethernet since i have been using wireless before.

Ethernet didn't work immediately so i open up the devices and find i have two erros in my devices.

Error 1: Ethernet controller, drives supposedly not installed. location: PCI bus 12

Error 2: unknown device, unknown location. How do i get it to recognise what this is?

Grrr I booted mine up this morning and all I can get out of the onboard sound is electrical noise, only had it a few months.

I'm having rotten luck with motherboards as of late, had two Asus go faulty (well one of them was faulty from day 1) and now this, I'm starting to lose confidence in high end hardware. :(

turn off intel speedstep or c1e eist c3/c6 in bios see if noise stops if not then you need to try another brand psu,its caused by cpu power saving states and your psu emi electromagnetic interference
