***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

I had a discussion with a Home Theatre CI, saying this is a great as a control interface, remote control and internet tablet (with the add on touchscreen)

Recommended a Pronto. However that doesn't have a physical keyboard.
Then a Creston. Again doesn't have a keyboard (can add one via USB) however then two units and pretty clunky. Also not a computer

Definietly got a niche in the market, if it has a touchscreen model with Audio/Video control built into it.

Planning to use a Slimserver touchscreen remote plus keyboard for fast song searches.

By the way, my £999 comment was tongue in cheek. In all seriousness, once the price goes up and the specs look the same as every other laptop manufacturer, I'll lose interest! Its the community that has sprung up around this low cost machine that has drawn me towards it.
Yeah I know I was referring to the $999 price (the UK price would be more like £550-600 I would guess). I just can't see anyone paying that much for such a low specced laptop. I've read all the CES footage I could find and didn't see $999 mentioned anywhere so I'll take it with a pinch of salt for now. It would just look like terrible value next to the current models.

Exactly what I was considering using it for - add home automation software aswell as youve pretty much got the king of all-in-one remotes ;)

SoyoDragon I can confirm too you have to delete all four partitions. I was installing from a USB stick and it wouldn't even let me get ot the gui stage of the XP installation until I had deleted all four.

Presumably one of the 4, prob the 'BIOS' one takes boot priority stopping XP working correctly.

As for the whole 900mhz thing there was a beta Bios out a while back but I read it was flaky though I don't rem it having the number 0501. The screen thing has been out a while but I've never bothered trying it as it replaces your display adapter drivers ?

Thanks guys for all your help using Xp on my Eee now 7 hrs to get windows and all the tweeks and software i need but its great very pleased :D:D

I don't I'll buy one until custom made, stripped down U/B/Xbuntu ISO CD is released. Is it possible that all code/drivers not related to Asus EEE PC hardware to be removed?

If you ran the Asus EEE Xandros recovery cd/usb if you made one in windows, what it put all 4 partitions back again?

If I wanted touch screen support, in XP would I need XP Tablet edition? I have XP Pro and MCE. I know Vista Ultimate has Tablet.

Ive never tried but that would make sense. Its meant to turn it all back to factory settings so unless the 4 partitions have no use then it would bring them back.

In xandros have you tried enabling expert mod IE the mode where you get to use normal xandros gui. Might be worth a look if your worried about bustng it. Remember ts just a normal pc you cant really go wrong.

to clarify,

to install xp delete the partitions and install.
To use the recovery ysb jiggy from the asus dvd, it REMAKES ALL 4 partitions. :)

tried and tested, multiple times! :D

My daughter has just spilt some hot tea over the top row of keys. Fortunately I was able to switch the laptop off, pad down the keyboard with tissue to clean the spillage and then let it dry overnight in the hot press. Thankfully the EEE still boots OK and appears to work normally with the exception that the top row of numerals and letters 'double' when tapped (eg, I press the key 1 and get 21 appearing. Likewose if I type q I get wq[/b]. This only happens with the top row of numbers letter (all the others are fine).

I think I need to clean under the effected keys but am not sure? Have we stuffed our new wee laptop or is this fixable. Is it possible to take off the keys to clean underneath? If so, is it just a case of using a cloth or what solution should I use.

Needles to say, big thanks in advance

PS: let me know if I should post this elsewhere.

Confirmed, I wiped the partitions earlier only to later restore from the DVD.

I havent really took much notice of this since i heard about it coming out.. and then it was $199 laptop..

now its £250 for the good one....??

Might be best to put it in the eeeuser forums since there might be more people there that have dissembled it and aware how to get under the keyboard if you can.

Best leave it off for now and hairdryer it for now...

This might help: http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=6036 :)

Good Luck

really considering getting one of these.. they just look too cool.
can anyone comment on what they're like for writing essays? are the keys just too small?
also whats the actual boot time like? I've seen been quoted as anywhere from 10-40 seconds on various websites!
