Samsung F1 1TB

Had 3 P5K Pros. Tried on the 404 bios they were delivered with then flashed to the 10xx latest one. Same issue on 2/3 boards - randomly loosing drives when set to AHCI/RAID on reboot cycles.

Google SATA Problem P5K or SATA disappear P5K and you'll get a host of other people having the same issue.

1 board I got appears to be ok 95% of the time, but dropped one drive twice (out of about 50 reboots) so sent that back too. From the sounds of it, about 70% of the boards have this issue but it isn't noticed unless you have over 3-4 SATA devices connected.

I think it's to do with the black/red headers. ASUS did something odd by making the black headers "slaves" to the red headers. There's some obscure mention of it in the manual.

Now using two Abit IP35's, no issues - rock solid stable.

sprognak, any advice with regards to this issue. Support said that typically when you get a blue screen in the initial stages of XP install that it could be a memory problem. Any thoughts?

You running it on that P5K pro in your sig? XP64 or 32 and what mode (AHCI/RAID/IDE) in the bios? Also what ports on the board are connected (0,1,4,5 are the red ports, 2,3 are black)

My first guess would be you have it plugged into a black connector which would make it unbootable in an ugly way. Take a look at page 2-27 of the Asus P5K Pro manual (SATA connector page) for some info. It's a stupid design imo.

I've tested my F1 1TB and 320 using a full scan with ES-Tool v2.11 and its passed all tests, no errors.

I also did a full check using windows built in checker - no problems found.

Incidentally, ES Tool v2.11 is the same as HDUtil but with a different name. For some reason they changed the name of the program when they increased the version number from v2.10 to v2.11.

My guess is they did this so when people call up Samsung Tech support and a customer says they've scanned the drive using HDUtil the rep can say it's not supported and ask them to use ES-Tool instead. They could just say "Yo need v2.11 or higher" but you know these customer service reps.. :D

Thanks for your reply. I have tried installing XP on both drives using RAM voltages of 2.1 and 2.2. My raptor is connected to the first Red port (SATA 1), whilst my samsung is connected to the second red port (SATA 2). Finally my SATA DVD writer is connected to the third red port (SATA 5). In bios i have selected AHCI mode and can see each of my drives in the AHCI config.

NOTE: I just noticed on page 2-28 that it advises me to connect the right angled side of the SATA port to the harddrive. Then it advises that in order to avoid mechanical conflict with huge graphic cards you can attach the right angled side of the SATA cable to the mobo.

Which way is best?

Try the DVD on a black header, and move the F1 to SATA 5.

Ok, tried that - same problem. Support suggested that it could be to do with memory, although this wouldn't make much sense considering i was able to install vista.

This is so weird :(

Which driver disk are you using? Download the one from the Asus website and choose the ICH9/AHCI driver. There are two iirc, one of them gave me a BSOD after the first installation reboot. The one's I got on the CD were outdated.

Thanks for the reply :) I'm using the ones that came with my mobo. Bios is version 0401.

Are you talking about the "Make Intel ICH9 RAID Driver Disk Version 7.5.0.1017" drivers here. I assume i need the Vista 64 ones as thats the operating system i have installed at the moment? Note, i'm just letting it go into the initial XP setup screen. I havn't tried loading any drivers from flash drive etc.

Edit - you want: "Make Intel ICH9 RAID Driver Disk for Windows XP & 64bit XP/ Vista/ 64bit Vista."

Version 7.5.0.1017 2007/09/17 update
Description Make Intel ICH9 RAID Driver Disk for Windows XP & 64bit XP/ Vista/ 64bit Vista.
File Size 1.38 (MBytes)

When you do the F6 and choose your driver, there are a few options, I forget the exact one you want but one worked for me and 2 didn't.

Bah, posting at the same time lol. First off, flash the bios up to 0904 - I was unable to install Vista at all until I'd done that. Then go into CMOS and load defaults/reboot/re-enter settings/reboot etc.

Use the makedisk utility from the website to make a driver floppy, then boot install the OS.

When you boot from the CD, hit F6 to load drivers from a floppy, then select the AHCI ICH9 drivers.

ahaha, unfortunitely i don't have a floppy drive! I put the Intel ICH9 RAID drivers on a flash drive but once the third party drivers section came up, it said that it couldn't find a removable device / floppy. I've heard that you can get around this by 'injecting' the drivers within the root of the XP setup cd. Is this correct? And if so, once they are 'injected' do i still need to hit F6 during the setup process? EDIT: Its called slipstreamed right?

Cheers for the help btw. TBH, i never setup a RAID array so i simply did not think to load any drivers for XP setup. I guess when i installed vista it already had them.

Also, where did you get the flash util from? Should i use the app entitled "AFUDOS V2.32, AMI BIOS update tool" within the bios utilities section of the p5K download section?

Yep, I made up a boot disk (you can do a boot CD) and use the AFUDOS flash utility with the bios image.

You can also do it from within the bios, F12 I think - but it didn't want to work for me :(

Slipstreaming is possible, there's some good guides if you have a google for it.

if you haven't been able to put in the correct drivers during setup, then I'd 99% say you just found out the cause of the problem ;)

I've done a slipstream once before, but it was some time ago. As far as I recall, you don't need to F6 as the drivers are automatically loaded.

btw, if you're not bothered about SMART info (from AHCI) or RAIDing your drives, you may want to set IDE in the BIOS - no drivers required then. Not sure if there's a performance hit doing this or not though.

Also trying to extract Intel ICH9 drivers and the application keeps giving me a "Unable to get disk information" prompt and fails to extract any files. I have tried to extract to a flash and portable drive. Grrr, *slaps head* i should have bought a floppy drive lol.

Cheers, yeah was a total mission! Just installing everything now. All this for total anihilation. Started playing it 8 years ago and it's still good lol.
