The Acer ONE Thread

I personally would NOT recommend any netbook (Acer, Asus, MSI, Samsung, Toshiba, HP etc) to be used as a primary PC. The screen (8.9" or 10.2" both have 1024 x 600 resolution), keyboard and trackpad are too small.

The size was what I liked as is was exceptionally portable.

Was thinking of a better specced laptop as the desk machine/home machine

The ONE that comes with Linux - is there any reason I can't put XP on afterwards myself? Thinking abut one of these for my Mum as a pure email/internet machine.

The 8G SSD version isn't so good for XP because the SSD is slow at writing.

Bearing in mind what it's for would that really be a problem?

What about the Linux distro that's on there, is that OK for an average user?

The slow writes are a problem because XP uses the swap file a lot - there is only 512MB of RAM.

The linux distro is fine for the basic AA1. When I had one, it booted up fast, web browsing was good (bearing in mind the low res display). I never used the email app.

Does anyone know if the 6cell and 9cell battery's for the acer one on the popular auction site stick out the back of the laptop or if they are the same size as the original battery?

They stick out.
There are pictures over at the aspireone forums

So, just to check, for email and web browsing the A110 is going to be fine for my Mum with Linux on it ?

I've recently installed XP to my (well, the Wife's) 8GB AA1, and whilst it's not as snappy as the stock linux distro it's not that bad after a few tweaks, certainly still very usable and it's worth taking the small speed hit for the extra functionality of having an XP install.

I agree that the standard linux OS is fine for basic use though.

Whilst I'm in here I'll mention that the AA1 is a great little machine, and it's a godsend for stopping the misses and kids tying up my main rig ;)
