The Acer ONE Thread

Did all the updating last night, really impressed with the little thing.

Can you not use the webcam with MSN on it then? I'm sure there was an option for it when I was looking !

Not on the linux version mate, only if you install xp.

Same problem as us mac users have!

Well the ONE has gone down really well with Mum, she's not stopped playing with it all day !

One question though. Facebook walls aren't displaying for some reason. This is using the standard FireFox installation. Do I need to install a plugin ?

Cheers

My GF got me a 512MB 120GB linux One for christmas, its brilliant so far! I will probably buy a cheap USB dvd drive for it, might look at putting XP on it to.

The webcam does work with the MSN application fine, I use it all the time (Linux 512mb version).

Do you mean the facebook walls appear at the bottom of all the other stuff on the page? Mine does this and afaik there is no solution for it.

It wasn't showing at all, but I didn't try scrolling down. Will give it a go.

I have tried on 3 linux ones and the option is blanked out? what am i doing wrong?

That's strange, I just open a conversation, click the webcam option and click "show my webcam". Does it work when you open it via the "Fun" section? And have you ran the auto updater?

Acer one "blues"

Well had the blue acer one for all of two days, had a complete nightmare with it, took forever to live update, had to factory reset it three times ( linux is still a mystery to me ) and l stupidly used my desktop to create the backup memory stick, which killed my network card and AV, so after this l took it back and got the samsung NC10 instead as no xp acer one available, hopefully no one else will these kind of disasters as myself.

Have to say loved the look of the acer one, just wished l could have got the xp verion instead, and it really killed me taking it back, just one of those things l guess.

But hey still have a blue netbook :)

you make the Sammy sound inferior to the Acer "But hey still have a blue netbook" lol... how wrong you are :D
I assure you its a step UP! your gonna love it ;)

I just used a USB CD drive and installed XP and put another 1.5GB of ram on mine, sorted! Just going to look at getting a bigger battery now, I love how tiny it is, though the keyboard can take some getting used to!

yeh still getting used to my 10" netbook keyboard but hey i dont consider it a problem more of something you gotta get used to, thats the price you pay with making a device extremely portable.

Updates done yay and webcam works in fun section, i will have a good look at it tomoz as its the little-uns lappy :)

Just figured it out, when you create an account you have to make sure "Use a Windows Messenger compatible service" is disabled.

Hmmm, I wonder if one of these Acer One / 512MB / 120GB machines would be ideal as portable photo storage for when I'm away on holiday - copy the days photos on the netbook, sort and toss any obviously out of focus shots etc thus freeing the cameras memory card for the next day. A little more expensive than the likes of portable photo storage drives but a lot more practical. Not as bulky as a full sized laptop either.

This was my reason for looking into getting one

Acer Aspire One White

This was my reason for looking into getting one

This is also the reason why I purchased one before Xmas. I got the white one from Currys for £185.24 after discount. I partitioned the hard drive into C: (11GB) and D: (100GB), added another strip of 512MB Ram and loaded Windows XP Professional on it from a USB flash drive.

It runs much smoother with 1GB Ram and I much prefer Windows to Linux.

My son uses it to surf the CBeebies website in bed, battery life in not the greatest at around 2.5 hrs, looking to purchase a 6 or 9 cell battery later.

I did look into buying a Samsung NC10 before taking the plunge with this, wasn't able to justify the extra £100 for what is a very similar spec Netbook.

The keyboard on the Acer Aspire One is a little small, but you get use to it, all in all, very happy with it.
