hardware wise compared to the 3G, I can understand why they aren't pushing it, and it'll probably still be really popular, but my techy inclinations are being drawn towards something more tweakable and open.

How can you say this? How can you say the update is lacklustre when it's not been announced yet. You don't know what's in the update, there's absolutely nothing but rumour and speculation.
