****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

Hoping someone can help me, no doubt some of what I am about to say will seem silly to a lot of people on here :/

Ive just made the switch to android after been with Nokias for 10yrs, and the flashing process seems more complicated.

Having had a look at the thread on XDA http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 Im a bit stuck... Ive posted on there but thought id post on here too incase anyone could advise me on what to do.

My S2 is on Voda UK. It currently has KE2 firmware and says its the latest. I want to debrand so I can have KE7

I dont get the kernels and rooting part of the thread as one part says
You do not need to root or unroot the device to update the firmware.

Is there a noob guide somewhere? lol

Any assistance or tips on what I need to do would be greatly appreciated. With Nokias you just flashed one file and off you went.. My S2 has been here for 3hrs and still ive not had a play :/

The threads on XDA "are" pretty simple to follow if you read it carefully... if people can't understand the instructions then I recommend not messing around with things like that in the first place in case you end up bricking your nice new phone. :)

lol Im not that bad.

Ive done it now anyway :p though do have one question.

I followed the guide and at the very end it says
Now you can flash the Stock kernel to get rid of the yellow triangle just like how we flashed the insecure kernel above.

Well I did that, though I also started SuperOneClick again  and clicked "root"

When I did, SuperOneClick crashed and it occured to me that I prob didnt need to click root for the 2nd time? Basically my phone now shows KE7 firmware, though I just want to know how to confirm if i have root or not?

You don't flash the stock kernal with superoneclick, that is just used to root the phone. You should use ODIN to flash the stock kernel. So go find the stock kernal for KE7 and use ODIN to flash that.

Then grab either Titanium backup or root explorer as if they work then your rooted.

Yes I know. Sorry maybe I didnt explain it properly. After I put the stock kernal back on, i then opened superoneclick (as you do previously in the thread) and clicked ROOT again because it said..

Now you can flash the Stock kernel to get rid of the yellow triangle just like how we flashed the insecure kernel above.

So i followed the above part again, inc superoneclick (where it then crashed, not the phone, just superoneclick)

Then grab either Titanium backup or root explorer as if they work then your rooted.

Erm, dont know what that is. This is day 1 for Android world for me :D

Edit: Ok ive download Root Explorer v2.3 - However now when I plug the phone into the computer... it says USB connected but wont come up or let me access through my computer anymore :( Not sure what ive done...

And if i try to load Kies I get "Reconnect the device in samsung Kies (PC Studio) more. Current connection mode not supported by Kies"

Maybe you still have USB debugging mode enabled?

Right I get what you have done now. What you should have done is:

1. Flash the new firmware to debrand the phone
2. Then use superoneclick to root the phone
3. Then you just use ODIN to flash the stock kernal to get rid of the yellow triangle at startup.

And thats all you should have done and not done the superoneclick thing again. As the firmware and kernal are 2 different things.

So if you have root explorer can you use it to see into your system folder, does it give any errors? If not you have rooted ur phone.

As for the USB thing when you have connected the phone to your pc have you dragged the notification bar down and then clicked on USB connected and then you have to click on another button to mount ur phone as it were lol. And as richdog has said you probably have USB debugging still on which isn't a biggy, just switch it off when you want to connect via KIES.

Well it would, The stock kernal is secure and superoneclick can't start. You can only use superoneclick with the insecure kernel. What I don't get is why anyone is still using superoneclick and insecure kernels when the cf-root kernels are available.

He's probably seen an earlier post where it was done like that before cf-root was available. I did it the way he has but only because cf-root wasn't available. Also no one has answered my question about nandroid backups, how do you do them?

Just got an email saying I'll have my SGSII tomorrow to play with. First Android phone, coming from Nokia N900, so whats the plan of action...? Will this do?

1: Charge that battery up
2: Root that mofo using this guide
3: Delete Bloatware (anyone know what crap T-mobile puts on their phones?)
4: ???
5: Profit?

Does Android have decent web browsers that can run flash in webpages fine? Care to suggest one?

Codecs, where do I get them? I'll be playing a lot of video on the phone (well I hope so anyway)

Whats the best Android IRC client?

Is Android easy to sync with Outlook? Do you need an app for it? if so which one?

Is there a method of importing all contact details from your Facebook?

Only thing I think I'll miss from the N900 is a the FM Transmitter, but I can buy one of those dock things for the car anyway. Possibly the pop-out full qwerty keyboard too, but that'll just take time to adjust, no biggy.

Richdog, yes I did have, I wasnt aware I was supposed to disable it again

Matrix... Using explorer I can see all folders with no errors :D

I did think the whole process was long winded, though I was following the biggest guide I could find. I.e. there was no mention of cf-root kernals.

By the looks of it ive done it all correctly, it reads KE7 for the firmware which is what I was trying to do :) Thanks to everyone who responded, really do appreciate it :D

I have also changed from the N900... and what a beast! Though as above it will take me some time to get used to not having a keyboard.

Edit: quick question, Now I can get back into Kies under firmware it says... "This version of the device cannot be updated" where as normally it would say "you have the latest version" etc... Just wondering, now im unbranded will future firmwares from Samsung become available through Kies or will I have to do the whole flashing thing manually each time?

The stock browser is good, but some of us like Boat Browser (www.boatgo.net).

You don't need any codecs, and the stock player will play everything. I personally prefer to use MoboPlayer, but that also works with codecs that are part of the original ROM.

I think the Facebook application from the Market has an option to sync contacts.

I would also flash stock KE7 on there, completely removing the T-Mobile ROM.

:)

Tried to take a picture 'camera failed'...reboot *sigh*

I really think you should consider returning the phone for a replacement, you're having issues that are far from common and a high level of instability, assuming you're running a stock rom it's almost definitely a faulty unit...
