I also find the interlocking grip difficult, I have used the overlapping grip for as long as I can remember.

With regards to working out what's going wrong when hitting a poor shot, have you taken lessons before? Having the theory behind your golf shot will help a lot with this.
 
Love this thread! I have played golf on and off since I was 9 (30 now) and have recently got back into it. Played my first 9 holes in over 3 years on Tuesday and shot a a 47, which I was reasonably happy with. I have always had problems in the past with slicing my drives and to a smaller extent my irons but I have been working on a slightly "stronger" left hand grip position and seem to be improving with every shot.

My current bag consists of:
Hippo ITX2 driver & 3W
Hippo ITX2 3-PW irons
Hippo Putter
Ben Sayers M8 LP 20* hybrid

Picked up the irons first from american golf around 5 years ago. Went in to try a good few sets to see what fit and they were like gloves! Got the driver, 3W and putter a little while after, back when it came out, the ITX2 was reviewed as the longest driver under £200 and when I hit it right, I would agree to that!

I started with the interlocking grip but found it 'tensed' me up too much, my forearms were totally solid and shoulder felt tight, changed to overlapping and everything is a lor more relaxed.
 
Interlocking grip feels more natural to me. I find it stops my wrists getting too funky too. I get blisters on my left middle finger if I use the overlap, though I guess this points to a grip tightness issue.

If it's good enough for Tiger and Jack, it's good enough for me :p. Not that it seems to be helping my game at the moment :(. That said, the vast majority of pros apparently use Vardon / overlapping, I just can't get used to it.
 
Personally I use the Overlapping grip. No particular reason why its just what I was shown when I started and it just feels natural now. However I can interlock or use the baseball grip(10 finger) and hit the ball correctly. The most important part of the grip is ensure that your hands are parallel and you can get back to the same position at impact.
 
Has anyone with an iPhone 4 tried the iPing app and cradle? App is free, cradle is about £25.

I'm interested, but not sure if £25 is just a little bit rich for what it is.

On another note, finally succumed to temptation and bought the Golfshot app. Yes it was £21, but it is really very good, and pretty darn accurate too.

Random question. I quite fancy getting the new Adidas golf shoes. Does anyone know how much of a difference there is between normal fitting and wide fitting shoes? I don't really know what to expect. I imagine the best idea would be to just go and try them on, but oh well.
 
I have the Adipure shoes in Wide, and though comfy they dont really support the arch of my foot too well. Bought some of the Adidas Tour 360 ATV yesterday (using up my AG vouchers i won! :D) in normal and they are a lot a lot tighter around the arch and feel more supportive. Very nice shoes, far more comfy than the FootJoy Syn-rg i went in for!
 
Did two rounds today in this glorious weather whilst carrying clubs and I'm absolutely shattered. Shot 89 and 92 but was ready to collapse by the 17th on the 2nd round. I definitely need to improve my short game as I waste so many shots with chips that either go 4 inches or 40ft past the hole.
 
Another frustrating day spent on the golf course! I lost at least 6 balls over the 18 holes, and lost many a shot with mis hits. The frustrating part is that I hit some sweet shots, but they were far outweighed by the mistakes.

You need to change the way you think about golf on the course :-)

Golf is one of the only games where you start with a score and the idea is not to throw it away.
We can all hit great shots but the the pros make less mistakes. They do not swing themselves out of their shoes and they always stay in balance.

Next time you play golf try to turn the game around and play each hole as a Handicap par. For example if you get 2 shots on a Par 5 then that's a Handicap Par 7. If you aim to score 7 at the worst you will be pleasantly surprised how easy that is and how many time you manage to make it in 6 or even 5 shots just by changing the way you think about the way you play the hole.

Also 1 other piece of advice remember your out there to ENJOY yourself your paying for the privilege of playing so get as much FUN out of it as possible.

This completely. Whilst it's a competitive game, enjoy it. I hardly get time to play these days with work, 2 kids etc etc. When I do get out to play, i play with an enjoyment of being out with the lads on a nice day playing golf.

If I shoot a bad score, so be it. I don't practise due to lack of time so can expect to be shooting great scores, however I've found that due to not being overly concerned about the score, i've played fairly steady and consistent without being amazing or anything this year.

I enjoy my golf so much more now that I did 5 years ago when I was playing 3 or 4 times a week and beating myself up after a bad round!
