What you guys reccomend as a second hand 5 and 3 wood for a beginner?

Personally I would scour Ebay and pickup a good brand of club second hand rather than going for a cheapo brand new club.

The problem with cheap woods is that they will have cheap shafts in them that arent very good, and most beginners dont realise that the shaft is the most improtant part of the club.

When buying a golf club think of the shaft as the Engine and the head as the Steering Wheel. Its very difficult to steer anything if the engine is unreliable.

I obviously cant link you to any auctions on here but if you let me know how much you want to spend and I could PM you some examples to look at.

I use a Ping G15 3 wood which is very easy to hit, it's also a great club as a substitute driver if you're struggling with the big stick...in fact i hit the G15 almost as far as my Nike driver.
I also have a King Cobra 5 wood which is stupidly easy to hit off the fairway and out the rough, next club down is a number 4 rescue.

I think I paid £90 for my G15 3 wood, very good price for a great club.

Depends how much you want to spend and how much you play, or plan to play.

Gumtree is always worth a look too.

Well we had the first (semi) official OcUK golf society game today, all two of us :p

Met up with Rob this morning and unfortunately it seemed every man and his dog were up for a round of golf (I blame the beautiful weather). We eventually managed to get on the first tee after around half an hour of practice on the range and putting green.

After a brilliant start by eagling the first hole my consistency soon went to pot as per usual, too many bogies, doubles and 3 putts, not enough gir's, pars and better. Having said that even though the golf was somewhat lacking Rob proved fantastic company, cheers mate. Here's hoping the next game that's organised will have a better turnout although admittedly this was fairly short notice for everyone.

Anyway here's my woefull round, I'll let Rob tell you how he got on :)

Yeah second hand decent clubs is the plan, I've got a set of Callaway X-14 irons which I got for £50 on ebay. I seem to have misplaced the SW and some bugger on the course has stolen it though :( I'll be a poor student next month so I don't want to spend more than £20-30 hehe.

I've been looking at Big Bertha Warbirds that about 10 years old as they seem to go cheapish, not really sure what I'm looking for though other than I don't want a stiff shaft.

The Warbird is an aweome club I still have mine in the bag after 10 years. People laugh when they see me using such an old 3 wood but then soon stop when I stripe it 250 yards down the the center of the Fairway (Normally 20 yards past where they just hit there new £300 driver). I have tried several different 3 woods but have never found anything that has given me a whole lot more than the warbird.

Makes sure you find 1 that has been looked after the obvious weakness of a graphite shaft this old will be the wear point where the top of the shaft rubs aginst the bag. If the user has kept their bag in good condition and tucked the headcover inside the slot then the shaft will be fine.

There are plenty of these clubs on ebay that you should be able to able to get delivered for around the £20-£25 mark. I would however recommend that if the grip is worn then get it regripped at your local club normal £10 maximum per club (for the grip and fitting).

Yep, the inaugural (I think?) OcUK Championship was a great success. Many thanks for organising it Jason, it was excellent fun despite my abominable golf. Sorry I wasn't able to give you a better game, but this man ^ is a talented striker of a golf ball let me tell you OcUK golfers! Jason's eagle on the first par 5 made me realise that 'there are two separate games going on here' :p.

Guys the Izaak Walton course is a thoroughly pleasant place to play golf, so if you ever get the chance to play there or Jason organises another game there, I can recommend it completely. Friendly atmosphere and clubhouse and an extremely well kept course.

Jason diplomatically neglected to tell you just how bad I was, so for what it's worth, I shot an epic...120!! This incorporated a few 10s, several multiple bogeys and zero pars let alone birdies. My 1 wood typically either ended up on the wrong fairway (slice to the right) or about ten metres to my left, and I was usually concentrating so hard on wondering how the ball ended up so far from the intended target, that Jason was left to do the 'fore' shouting. Rubbish.

However I still enjoyed the game, partly due to the satisfaction gained from the rare occasion on which I did hit the MP33s as they are meant to be hit: right in the middle. These are quite clearly the wrong clubs for me at this time, but I love them like the ex-girlfriend that always was a crazy bitch but great in bed, and am definitely going to stick with them.

The course has a fairly wide but occasionally treacherous front nine, a nice opening to a round. The back nine is very pretty and picturesque, with smaller greens, tighter fairways, and some interesting and challenging water features.

Thanks again mate, hopefully we can do it again once the baby arrives and is settled in!

Hey chaps, i won a nearest the pin in a fun day on Saturday, and won 18 brand new Top Flight balls

Fingers crossed you'll be somewhat settled with your new arrival by this time next year and who knows you may just be allowed to play golf now and again :p Anyway great day yesterday although I think I suffered from a bit of sunstroke last night, felt decidedly ropey and only managed to drink two pints, very unlike me

Hey chaps, i won a nearest the pin in a fun day on Saturday, and won 18 brand new Top Flight balls, i wont use them, shout if you want them, £10 delivered?

Congrats on nearest the pin, I'll pass on the Top Flights though :p

Haha, hey Robbie, i'm on the same boat! Wierd thing is, her indoors (finance director) has approved my request for joining a 'premium' club here in Leeds despite the pending new arrival! Though she has put some serious limitations on it (i.e. playing veeeery early on a saturday/sunday morning and not getting tanked up afterwards......)

:D

I'll pass on the top flites too! Already got a mountain of them i'm trying to wade through in the practice bag.

For anyone interested thegolfshoponline.co.uk has Spin Milled Vokey wedges on sale for only £59.99 at the moment.

I have used the shop before and can vouch for them.

Haven't bought a wedge, but I needed some new golf balls (my recent swing "remodelling" has made me lose a few :P) so bought some of the cheapy ones from there.

Cheers.

Played yesterday. Yet another frustrating outing. Some fantastic iron shots though, all over the pins like a rash, which was a huge positive.

Driving went a bit array though, which didn't help me, and I got stuck in 2 bunkers (needed 2 shots in one and 4 in the other!!!) which spoiled what was otherwise a decent round :(

Had 1 birdie, 6 pars, 5 bogies, 4 doubles, 1 treble and 1 quadruple. So take out the 3 and 4 over and it was a really decent round playing off 21 - gotta take the positives :D

Played my usual par 64 course and hit my usual +36 :(

My Putting improved this week, but my iron play's all over the palce, also I'm struggling to shake off my hook shot whether it be with an iron or a wood. Oh well, I can only get better I suppose.

Good evening,

Thought it best to introduce myself to this thread. I have been playing golf on and off for years, was a member of Howley Hall for 3 years 1997 - 2000 with a handicap of 26. Played municipal courses in and around Leeds until this year when I joined The Manor (http://www.themanorgolfclub.co.uk/), started on a handicap of 23 and down to 19 now.
Some very nice golf clubs in this thread. My bag :-

Driver - Ping G5
3 & 5 Wood - Taylor Made V Steel 2006
Irons - Yonex V-mass 260 3-SW
Hybrid - Callaway heaven wood 23 degree
Cheapy 60 degree lob wedge
Putter - Ping Karsten Anser 2

Can't remember if I mentioned the contents of my golf bag, so here goes...

Driver - Ping G5 10.5R (could do with a little less as I hit it quite high)
3 Wood - Taylormade Burner
Irons - MD Golf Superstrong Tungsten Ti 3-9 (have the PW but replaced it with the 48 below)
Wedges - 48, 52, 56 MD Seve and 60 MD Norman Drew
Putter - Mizuno Bettinardi C02 (I think)

Going to replace the irons before next season I think, although I am considering joining a much more expensive club, so will have to wait and see

Although I have had several lessons I still struggle with a hook and from topping the ball on occasion. Today I went to the driving range to try remedy these errors by concentrating on 3 basics in my set up. The hinge, changed my grip from the baseball grip to the interlock and finally better weight distribution. I came away from the range with renewed confidence because these 3 changes to my set up vastly improved my driving from the tee. Hopefully, with more practice I'll see an improvement on the course.

I personally find the interlocking grip much harder than the overlapping grip to get comfy with. The reason why I am so inconsistent with my shots are because I find it hard to know what I've done wrong when I hit a poor shot.
