Thanks. I was going to look for that quote. It's been the name of the game all along to tackle the 780 GTX. The crew at AMDs Montreal event also clarified the same thing to press.

The only person who has compared it to the Titan is AMD Roy, who for all intensive purposes comes across as one big wind up merchant .

You're right that Roy is a wind up merchant, but it's worth pointing out that he only said the card would ridicule Titan in a specific game using Mantle, which it still could, again in regards to the review, Roy also hasn't made any claim about it being a titan killer.

I agree with most of this, the only caveat I would add is that you cannot separate performance and price when comparing GPUs. It is disingenuous to declare R9 290X as a failure because it isn't a Titan Killer on performance while ignoring the price.

By that logic if R9 290X was 50% faster than Titan but was priced at £2000 would it be declared a Titan killer, or an overpriced joke?

The 290X is targeting the 780 and should compete with the titan. But it is not supposed to be or marketed as a titan killer.

However the quote you mention comes from AMD product manager David Nekechuck. He's saying that in mantle a 290X will be able to ridicule a titan. Strong words indeed and we'll need to wait and see if its true. I highlighted the part in bold.

AMD Roy had nothing to do with this claim as previously suggested. Though he did jokingly tweet to EVGA Jacob that a single 290X would match 4xtitans in BF4. Of course this was a joke and he was responding to a tweet EVGA made.

He stated that, performance wise, the R9 290X will more than compete with rivals Nvidia.

Qualifying his statement in gaming terms, Nekechuck claimed it meant that “with Battlefield 4 running with Mantle (AMD’s new graphics API), the card will be able to ridicule the Titan in terms of performance” and that it will be able to run the game “much faster” than Nvidia's best single GPU offering when using AMD's Mantle API, set to launch in December.

To be clear: if you're talking about a card "killing" another then it's nothing to do with price. Otherwise the 7950 kills any card .

Titan killer means it has to be above 10-15% faster, stock vs stock. If it isn't it isn't a Titan killed. It's on par. Nobody other than forum argumentative people care about 5% here or there in the grand scheme of things. Sure we can talk about the card being faster if it's 5% faster but it's not a "killer".

In fact that whole term is rank.

R9 290X was never being released as a Titan killer, it is being released as a competitor to GTX780 and it seems to have acheived your "killer" criteria as it looks to be at least ~10% faster on average for a similar price.

Ironic isn't it, the reference GTX 780 was hailed as a Titan Killer for being only ~7% slower at stock and the aftermarket 780s for actually being marginally faster than Titan. The reason for this high "Titan Killer" praise... it was cheaper.

it seems price is only a valid metric when it makes Nvidia look good.

It doesn't render my point moot at all as it wasn't even necessarily aimed at AMD saying it was a Titan killer. You've assumed it is and that is your fault. It was about anyone saying it was a titan killer. To be a "killer" it has to be faster by a margin. 5-10% is fag paper territory.

Killer is all about performance. Or it should be. If you factor in price it becomes convoluted.

The truth is, It is mest to have a copper base and copper heatpipes because it conducts heat better than aluminum.

Copper heat conductivety=401

Aluminum heat conductivity=250

So the common illusion is that a 100% copper HSF whould cool better than an aluminum HSF.

This however is not the case, because we have to look at the specific heat capacity of both of these metals.

Aluminum=.902
copper.....=.375


The ideal heatsink has heat pipes that draw heat away quickly and fins that Dont change temperature quickly.

To cool "efficiently" it must have a high specific heat capacity because the temperature of the fins must not be changed quickly (wich is difficult to do because air doesnt cool very efficiently). Thus a heatsink with aluminum fins and a copper base would cool the best.
