It was a scheduled flight from Amsterdam Schipol to KL, it will have had hundreds of Europeans on board many of whom will have been connecting for onward travel to Australia.

and?

Thank you for pointing out the obvious, but keep going.

My son flew over that area with Malaysian a few weeks ago on his way Sydney, very scary.

RIP.

Unbelievable. There is a UK NOTAM in effect advising British carriers to route around the conflict area for just this reason....You'd think that other nations would have similar foresight seeing as it's hardly the first time this has happened (if it was shot down mistakenly).

Ok maybe not so much missile lock detection but would the missile have appeared on the radar?

Run of the mill commercial planes have forward facing radar and weather detection apparatuses in the nose of the plane.

Only Government owned and maintained planes from civilian selection have the type of radar that would spot the missle.

Basically, the first anyone on that flight would have been aware of the missle, is visual spotting or when it hit them.

Combat aircraft rarely get hit because of these detection systems, a targeted commercial flight is like throwing a knife at a blind man .

Note: tin foil hay firmly back in its draw and completely unfolded..till next time

I am not sure how easy it is too make a mistake with such modern weapons. Don't they have radar and the ability to identify targets from the ground? I would have thought that they could open a line of communication these days and at least identity that it is a commercial airline? It just seems careless rather than a mistake, just shooting at anything in the air.

Why is everyone jumping to conclusions that it was Russia that shot it down?

why would Russia shoot down a plane in Ukraine, Russia aren't even in Ukraine.

It's a civil war against the government and the Ukrainian people. Nothing to do with Russia.

Pro Russian forces are not Russian, they are Ukrainian.

Your post clearly implied you felt that it was purely a Malaysian issue and would therefore be unlikely to spark anything further as a result.

No I didn't, you made a conclusion that I did it was exclusive to one country.

But why would WWIII start because civilians died unless they could prove it was an intentional target at the plane from Russia.

WW1 started because a prince got killed, because of the treaties.

It's not the same here. Sure, the poop is about to hit the fan big time but I can't see anyone invading Russia and start WWIII, not Ukraine, not Maylasia, not Holland, not Australia.

I don't see anyone sending in NATO forces to deal with the pro Russian separatist either even if it was them.

Nor they will invade Ukraine if it was them.

18.42 Clock: One unconfirmed report has it that the alleged commander of the pro-Russian rebel, Igor Strelkov, wrote shortly before the announcement of the crash of the Boeing 777 that his soldiers have shot down an Antonov AN-26 in the same region. It is unclear whether the armed forces have fired on the wrong plane may - and actually have targeted the Malaysian Boeing.

Why would either side do this? Why would they consider it a target? Purely to then blame the other side for it?

I very much doubt it was deliberate. If I had to guess using my complete lack of any real knowledge I'd suggest it was likely an error on the part of whoever did it. Nobody would deliberately set out to do it, it achieves nothing and brings enormous problems on those that did it.

Why else would you mention Malaysia specifically? I didn't suggest somebody was going to invade Russia, I just felt it prudent to put a bit of context in and explain why it's far from just a Malaysian issue, that's all. Lots of Europeans would use Malaysian Airlines to travel to the Far East and Australia - I've done it myself!

It matters not - I've no appetite to continually argue over it with you.

17:26: Pro-Russia separatists in Donetsk have denied bringing down the aircraft, according to Interfax. "The plane was shot down by the Ukrainian side. We simply have no air defence systems of this kind," separatist spokesman Sergey Kavtaradze told the agency.

RIP to all onboard.

Surely no one is going to claim responsibility for this as I can only guess this was a mistake whilst aiming at what they thought was a military plane.

why would Ukraine shoot a plane down that already entered their airspace and flew over most of the country?

Why would the rebels shoot a plane down flying towards them and over them?

Why would russia shoot a plane heading towards their border with 12,000 troops on it?

ukraine seems like the least likely.

rebels might not have the capability but if they do it was given to them from russia like a lot of the other gear the rebels have
