Boeing 777 shot down

The rebels are Ukrainian not Russian. If the rebels shot it down that would mean it was shot down by Ukraine.

This was a passenger plane, don't know where 12,000 troops came from.

I mean't the 12,000 russian troops sat on the russian border.

guess most you guys have no clue

Maybe russia thought revenge was a coming for the ukraine fighter jet that supposedly russia shot down

If the plane was at 30,000 feet and travelling at 500 kts then it is pretty safe to say it wasn't a shoulder launched missile that brought it down.

someone shot down the su25 on wednesday
someone also shot down a ukrainian ilyushin last week - which was flying far to high for normal man portable stuff to get
pro Russian separatists then gloat about shooting it down
ukraine will know what mh17 is and where its going because they have air defences and clivilian ATC -

pro russian sepratists would need very good eyesight to tell what it was before shooting it down

Think that's confirmed. It's only heavier artillery that could have done it.
Ukrainian transport plane went down last week and there were claims the missile that downed it was launched from inside Russia. Be interesting to see where this one was fired from although there's little doubt it will have been Russian supplied. Question is just who pushed the button.

Exactly. It seems fairly obvious what's happened and whose fault it was, if indeed it was a missile strike.

Were they gloating because it was true or for the PR value? The Taliban used to claim all sorts of nonsense, they knew some people would know better but for those who didn't it made the Taliban seem more powerful than they really were. Just because they say they did it doesn't mean they actually did or that they have the capability to do so.

Obviously then the question would be who really did it.

its even possible that pro russian separatists stole it from the ukraine forces
there are rumors around that they had one taken from ukraine forces (nothing to back this up as fact though)

im sure if its proved to be a BUK that Russia will claim this anyway (even if they did provide it to the rebels)

Then the posts magically disappear after the news breaks it was a commercial passenger airliner.

Funny that. I'm sure we will get some answers soon enough, hopefully some sat imagery can illuminate the situation some.

out of curiosity did you see those posts or did someone just tell you there were these posts and then that they were deleted ?

oh very possibly -the Taliban do indeed take credit for everything in Afghanistan, even mechanical failure helicopter crashes etc

They are separatists, not terrorists.

What value does claiming they shot down a passenger airliner have for Pro-Russian Ukrainian's cause? None.

There would be NO REASON for them to claim credit for this and EVERY reason to try hide the fact they were responsible (If they are)

taliban shot down many things.

American wouldn't lie about the capability of it's enemies during a war right? or the risk to it's military personal to appease the masses? might not go down too well with the troops moral either.

surely no country would ever lie about such a thing.... in the best interest of the public and all that BS

They were claiming they had shot down a Ukrainian military jet, not a passenger jet.

most complete made up rubbish post in a thread full of it

the US have admitted many times when things get shot down / blown up by the insurgents

Propaganda is useful to pretty much anyone in armed conflict regardless of what you're calling them.

What value does claiming they shot down a passenger airliner have for Pro-Russian Ukrainian's cause? None.

Which ties in with the comments saying that these claims have rapidly evaporated: one group sees an aircraft shot down, assumes their buddies in the next town over did it and publicly chalk it up as a PR victory for their side. Then they find out it wasn't a military aircraft and rapidly backtrack.

I'm not saying that this is what happened, just pointing out that just because they've claimed to have shot down aircraft in the recent past doesn't necessarily mean we should take their word for it that they did or that they have that capability.

I think he was meaning that they took credit when they thought it was a ukraine air force plane

and then took it back when they found out it wasnt

Exactly.
