Because nobody that wants Torres can afford his wages, like Nani.

And on Nani, it's being reported that Utd are paying all of Nani's wages taking the effective cost of Rojo to £21-22m.

I suspect we're hoping he does well at Sporting and then we can make that money back by selling him next summer.

I'm happy with Rojo, but he's very much a gamble. If LvG can instil some discipline then he'll be a fine player. I'm just not sure how many gambles we can afford to take right now.

Real Madrid want to sell Khedira and Di Maria don't they? Khedira would be a big improvement in midfield; seems other people aren't keen due to wages but we can at least offer that.

I guess that's the ideal scenario but he's going to have to do incredibly well to persuade one of the few clubs in the world capable of paying him £100k+ per week to sign him.

Even next summer he'll have 3 years left of a very lucrative contract, he's going to be very hard to shift. I think this is the beginning of 2 or 3 seasons on loan or a huge payoff that'll cancel out any fee you'll get for him.

We could still subsidise that though, we'll just have to convince any suitors to pay as much of his wages as possible. :p

Going to lose out quite badly regardless, but this is better than him being sat on the bench, he's not going to gain any value there.

I know but what you'll have to subsidise will be a fair bit. A club like Sporting, or a similar stature club that will realistically be after Nani, won't pay him more than £30-40k per week. That leaves a shortfall of £70k per week to make up or just over £10m based on 3 years being left on his deal.

Why would we be paying Nani 100k / week. He hasn't been consistently good for us for years and we gave him a new 5 year contract. Chances are that we didn't want to lose him on a free or for a token amount but paying him 25m over 5 years makes absolutely no sense.

We would know that no one that would want him would pay 100k / week so it would be stupid to protect an asset not worth much by paying a huge salary to him for not playing.

He is rumoured to be on £120k a week, but that's not remotely concrete (like with Young).

Given his form in recent years you'd have to think we'd at least have some clauses in the new contract he signed last year. Logically.

Im sure that 120k for Nani is what he could be on if he was starting 30 games a season (and therefore the wage the press would pick up on) - but I bet he is on something like 70-80k /week basic (given he has hardly played in 2 seasons)

edit - I wonder if the deal for Rojo is structured on the basis of Nani being 8m in total next summer (if he does well this season) so therefore Utd effectively get Rojo for £8m+ Nani?

I know Utd owe a payment in Dec, but by then it will be obvious whether Nani will work back at SP or not I would have thought.

5 league titles, a Champions League trophy and 3 Mickey Mouse cups during their time in charge. They're running your club as a business rather than a toy like City and Chelseas owners do so what incentive is there to spend more when you're winning something most seasons?

I always said United are the greatest club on earth to my friends & enemies and those figures show exactly why i maintain this fact! While the others are spending £600m we were losing the same amount and still doing better in Europe until Moyes.

Also Rojo is a good buy, Pace power 24 and can play two positions, When you play 5-3-2 this kind of player on the left of a back 3 is invaluable for cover for Shaw. It means instead of having two people to cover both we can make do with one and pay less wages. Aka more money to give to someone like Vidal which is how this club should be run all along.

To avoid a situation like last / this season where 3/4 of the defence leave at the same time perhaps ?Not to mention the disaster which has been CM for several years.

If anyone knows SAF does that generally you need to keep on spending /regenerating the squad to keep up with x (whether thats City, Arsenal, Chelsea or Liverpool , most of which have been above /directly competing with Utd during SAF's reign). He may have left, and possibly soured the board after the disaster of a decision regarding Moyes, but we are also talking about 8 years previous to that also.

edit- Also I guess it depends on how you read "free of charge" for the season. In the last few years especially Ive seen mention of fees being paid to the "rights owner" club of a loan fee , and from how its been written in numerous reports this is irrespective of the wages. So depending on the circumstances of the extension last summer, SL may still be paying a good portion of the wages (not that Utd have to worry about upto £5m for the season)

Versus his bargaining position at the time, where he could have just said fine and that he'd go on a Bosman if they wouldn't pay him a decent whack.

and potentially not get paid at all.....or get paid a lot less until he proved his fitness (which he probably couldnt have done for majority of last season) - edit and he may have also thought he stood better chance under Moyes where he was than going somewhere brand new - which is usually always a bit of a risk
