What film did you watch last night?

My son was given the best homework ever. After a debate in class his RE teacher told the to watch Life of Brian.

I knew the Monty Python films had recently landed on Netflix so fired it up. I was laughing all the way through but a lot went over his head. Netflix said HD but it was very grainy in places but then so was my DVD. 5/5

Ocean's Eight (2018) - 3/10

A boring heist movie with no edge to it.

Everything goes too smoothly and the story is formulaic, even with the twists and surprises along the way.

The acting and actresses are OK and suit the extravagant event, but there’s no style or thrills and very little humour in the proceedings.

Watchable rather than fun and entertaining, the AAA cast deserve something better and more interesting than this wasted opportunity of a film.

Beirut - 6/10 - Passable spy/hostage negotiation type film with a good performance from Jon Hamm but fairly average from everyone else, including a very plain Rosamund Pike. Story was OK, some obvious clichés just seem to be unavoidable but didn't distract from the enjoyment.

Pacific Rim Uprising - 1/10

Terrible, just terrible. I loved the first one but everything about this sequel was boring; music, cgi, actors, story - boring boring boring boring.

Surprised Del Toro wanted his name on the credits as producer.

Edit:

On reflection I was a bit harsh, 5/10 - one to watch when you have nothing better :p

Ready player one 6/10

Story was pretty poor and felt the action was way too busy. Too much going on to keep track. Way too much cgi.

But the nostalgic references were fun. Best thing about the film really.

Oh and it was at least half an hour too long.

I too loved the first film. Going to have to watch this sometime just so I can say I've seen it. Going by the trailers, it does look terrible.

Can't remember why dell Toro didn't direct this one also. Might be something to do with delays in getting the green light. Probably took too long and he had other stuff to work on. Typical Hollywood morons.

He was too busy directing the shape of water, which bagged him an Oscar.

Uprising isn't a great film by any stretch of the imagination, but 1/10? That's surely reserved for the most incomprehensible, badly directed, terribly acted messes?

I'd give Uprising 5/10. It was Cheesy, totally forgetable, not as good as the first (which lets be honest, is far from being a classic) but it wasnt rank awful.

Yeah, Pacific Rim 2 was a disappointment. It was as crap as the first one should have been but, thanks to some sort of Del Toro alchemy, wasn't.

Ha, maybe 1/10 was a bit harsh. I wrote that just after watching it and was just annoyed about what a waste of time it was. I really enjoyed the first one, yes it was cheesy but it was a good type of cheesy.

I don't know how you can make giant mechs boring but both uprising and transformers have managed it :p

On reflection it is more of a 5/10 but I'm still surprised Del Toro wanted to be associated with it as it sounds like he just told the director to follow his own vision and had none of that magical Del Tori input.

The only movie I've seen at the cinema that I would give 1/10 to was Battlefield Earth.

I remember my brother getting hold of a copy of this years ago. We sat down to watch it and had switched it off in disgust after about 15 minutes :p

I normally give a film at least half an hour before switching off, so that is some sort of a record :D

Uprising was very much the mirror image of the last independence day movie. The first feeling kind of epic, the second feeling kind of empty.

Ill watch anything, but I will go back and see the originals of both those films, not so the sequels. My last watch was Logan, didn't really work for me, very odd film.

The Shape of Water (2017)

Beautifully made, but I was ultimately disappointed with how 2-dimensional/stereotypical most characters were and how predictable/cliched the story is. I was expecting something more nuanced/original after all the praise and awards the film received.

Sicario 2

Yeah, its alright. Some nice cinematography and the same music buildup
BUT. It's just not as good as the first. Its good but its not awesome. Still worth a watch.
I didnt really like much of the film in the last 1/4... Its still good but it started doing stupid things...
7.5/10 but a few niggles.
