Are the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3's still a decent tyre to put on an E39 530i SE?

I can get four for £262.14, as below:

They're £308 now

But yeh Goodyear A3's are still a worthy tyre for a good price.

i have staggered on my weekend car of;

225/40r18 - front
255/35r/18 - rear

i have been reliably told that i can have the following for a more comfier ride

215/45r18 or 225/45r18 - front
245/40r18 - rear

does that sound right?

can anyone recommend me a decent tyre from mytyres? has to be mytyres due to 15% off ebay code. i was going to go with goodyear eagle f1's. unless there is a better tyre for cheaper. or a cheaper tyre which is similar in quality.

Don't expect to be wowed by an improvement in comfort moving from a 225 40 to 215 45, the sidewall difference is only a few millimetres. I'd be surprised if you could even tell the difference if you tried to blind test it. Those sizes would make your speedo over read slightly too (though probably not by as much as it currently under reads from the factory).

so would you recommend going 225/45 for the front then?

i wonder why the guy didn't recommend 220/45 or does that not exist?

That would over read even more and I'd still be surprised if you noticed the difference.

Changing from run flat to non run flat or from an 18 inch wheel to 17 inch where you could increase the sidewall by 20% without making your speedo inaccurate might be noticeable but for the sort of differences those quoted sizes would give I'd just stick with the normal size personally.

okay well i'm going to go for 245/40r18 on the rear for sure

front there is a bit of debate. a lot of people saying slight rubbing on 225/45r18. so that leaves me with 225/40r18 (stock) or 215/45r18 (supposedly more comfortable).

so that is now the question 225/40r18 or 215/45r18

i've already went from runflat to non-runflat.

i was going to buy 17's but personally they are all either ridiculously expensive for ones that need a full refurb on top (another 300-500 notes on top of buying them, i'd be better off buying new) or they look terrible.

so i'd rather stick with 18's for now as it's the cheapest option and still looks good.

so out of 225/40r18 (stock) or 215/45r18

would you recommend me trying the 215/45r18

I wouldn't bother personally, I'd rather run the correct size.

thanks for the info. but with the state of the roads and the car being so low down you literally feel everything. i'm trying to boost the comfort a little as well as safety. hitting some of these bumps at speed can make the car judder and shake a lot.

certainly food for thought but i'm going to try and boost the comfort a little. every little helps. if this doesn't work then in a few years i'll probably end up picking up 17's but i do feel they will ruin the look of the car.

90mm to 101mm of sidewall should help take some of the harshness off. Another big factor is the tyre make/product

i was going to go with eagle f1's unless you know of anything around the £100 mark which is cheaper? i'm using mytyres on ebay for the 15% discount they have on for the next 5-6 days

update: hearing good things about Uniroyal RainSport 3 it's a summer tyre with excellent wet grip. i'm in scotland where it rains a lot. so this looks good and it's slightly cheaper than the goodyears too by around £10 per corner.

You'll be lucky to get 5,000 miles out of the driven pair on something that weighs more than a shoe

i did see wear as being an issue but i only do around 2-3K miles per year and the car weighs around 1400kg. i saw one review where a guy said he got 20K miles out of them on a toureg the VW SUV. but all others complained about wear.

maybe i'll go with the eagle f1's then. will likely last longer than the car.
