The New European Super (borefest) League

Football really has now peaked on its journey to destination ******. It's been coming for years. The pandemic has highlighted how rubbish the games are without a crowd, yet fans are treated like **** with ideas like this and obscene ticket prices. You've got a lack of home grown talent, VAR ruining things, diving and play acting and time wasting still rampant, rules that need permanently fixing/altering/changing/adding, managers fielding deliberately **** teams in the FA Cup - what was once considered the pinnacle of cup conditions - and the "big 6" clubs constantly trying to make more money, whilst not investing in actual good players.

As an Arsenal supported I'm disgusted they are a part of this, and embarrassed to be referred to as a club inside the "big 6" given our recent performances and current squad.

I've generally found over the last year or two I'm just watching less and less football, even my own team. I just find the VAR controversy pathetic and so poorly implemented. It's just not enjoyable anymore.

I cannot imagine a league with no incentive to perform and no fear of relegation, i.e. an anti competitive league. This is nothing. This will be the most boring league ever. The novelty of playing these "big" teams will wear off when it's every week. It has the implications of ruining the whole EFL pyramid of competing and has knock on effects so vast, it will change football forever for the worse.

I think the PL should heavily fine and punish the teams involved with this including the very club I support.

Jesus, listening to Sky Sports News, some of the revelations from a board member, who wasn't named, if true, are shocking.

Owners 'apparently' don't care about the PR or backlash, they're happy if their players are banned from International competitions because they're club assets, grass roots football is irrelevant, as are managers, players, fans and club histories, league games will be considered secondary to the ESL games and TV rights will apparently be sold to US and Asian broadcasters.

These clubs need to be suspended from all competition and banned from signing players from clubs not involved. Drive them in to the ground and make them absolutely worthless.

None of this surprises me. These clubs are nothing more than brand names to be sold into Asia and the USA now. They've become totally divorced from their roots.

I remember the uproar when Wimbledon moved to Milton Keynes. This is infinitely worse.

I worked in India for almost a year back in 2010. Going to watch football matches in a bar there was utterly horrifying. People with absolutely no connection to a club were more vehement in their support, and their abuse of opposing teams, than the most vehement fans I've seen at matches or in bars here. The scope to market football and its tribalism into these markets, even if that tribalism is no longer grounded in reality, is vast and will make owners billions. It's a complete sell out and absolutely disgusting.

Just for clarity, this is nothing against India specifically, and you see the same across loads of other places - you just need to look at Twitter for evidence of this. India is just where I've had first hand experience.

O ffs Mike why? Lol

You heard about Legacy Fan quotes? Think that's the worst of the lot.

Assuming legacy fan refers to local fans etc the problem is for every 10,000 potential fans in Liverpool there's about 10million potential fans in China.

We've seen with companies like Nike and the NBA and others in America how corporations kowtow to China fearing being shut out of their market.

I just find it funny that fans of clubs who sold out to rich owners and largely bought success through years of outspending are now outraged about greed and care about protecting the soul of football.

Laughs...sorry no skin in this, but woudl they make any money in China as all the merch would be counterfeit.

This is the thing - for me, it's not about the soul of football. I totally appreciate that a well-paid London professional who rarely goes to matches is not a "real" fan. However, I'm fully aware of how important clubs are to "real" fans, and this is taking that away from them. And from a personal perspective, it's making what has for most of my lifetime been a sport with fascinating ups and downs and incredible underdog stories nothing more than a hyper-commercialised static business, in which the top clubs are nothing more than brands with a guarantee of making money.

Guaranteed to be the Glaziers saying that, if anyone did that is.

It must be lucrative otherwise sports like the NBA wouldn't be bending over backwards to appease China. I'd imagine if you're being televised in China you'll have sponsors willing to pay mega amounts just because of the massive outreach.

It's a massive market, and Chinese IP registries and courts have made huge strides in the last 5 years or so in cracking down on counterfeits (which are still rife, but it's much better than it was)

Im surprised they don't have counterfeit sports channels lol.

Would it show Chinese players dressed up in English kits playing in mock English stadiums? I'm sure I read about that happening already although when they show Liverpool matches the team plays in blue and the standard of football is shocking.

The problem is the Champions League only really appeals to small sections of Europe until you get to the latter stages when big teams go head to head, they're essentially trying to create an alternative all-stars league of the most widely recognised clubs where every match will appeal to audiences worldwide.

It'll cause the Premier League some structural problems what with European qualification but it seems to me it'll hurt UEFA the most.
