The New European Super (borefest) League

The problem is the Champions League only really appeals to small sections of Europe until you get to the latter stages when big teams go head to head, they're essentially trying to create an alternative all-stars league of the most widely recognised clubs where every match will appeal to audiences worldwide.

It'll cause the Premier League some structural problems what with European qualification but it seems to me it'll hurt UEFA the most.
Wenger lobbied this idea way back in the day diddnt he?

They are basing that around his character and the Munich vacancy to be fair.
I think he'll go. One of the reasons he joined us in the first place was because of the clubs history, the support and the challenge of getting us back on top. Working for owners who don't value the fans or history won't sit well with him nor will devaluing the trophies he's already won with us.

"I hope this Super League will never happen," he told Kicker, per Liverpool Echo.

"With the way the Champions League is now running, football has a great product, even with the Europa League.

"For me, the Champions League is the Super League, in which you do not always end up playing against the same teams.

"Of course, it is [financially] important, but why should we create a system where Liverpool faces Real Madrid for 10 straight years?

Doesnt mean he will resign but it isnt a good look.

I associate it with Friendlies is because it's pre-arranged.
CL now, teams get there on merit.

This Super League, a large selection are there pre-arranged. Ergo, friendles. Yes I know you keep banging on about CL started and no one will watch it, but has CL ever started out with teams getting there without merit and then fall back on just Champions?
The point being is that the merit has weakened continuously over the life of the European Cup and peoples appetite for the competition has grew. As supporters we continuously say "I'm done with football" and yet football has never been more popular. Somebody post a tweet earlier in the thread about how owners of these sides consider your traditional fan as a legacy fan and they're focussed on the new age fan and that, unfortunately, is the sad reality of football. The majority of football supporters have no or little ties to the country, let alone the city or local community. What they want as supporters is different to what you and I might want.

I understood the reality and everything you said.

I disagree with this compeition. I never watched pre-arranged games, I find friendlies boring. I have the same sentiment with this new league. It's no different to me, best players in England vs Best Player in Spain in a friendly. Whether they wear the England Shirt or Man U vs Real M shirt.

I still don't watch it. I never have for like 30 years, can't see myself changing now.

You might not but millions will. Anyway, I think we're getting ahead of ourselves. This threat is the biggest threat we've seen but I think that's ultimately what this is - everybody will back down, compromises will be reached, the big sides will get more money & say but will ultimately remain.........I think.

I personally don't have an issue with that. Football used to be something where you would go to the stadium to watch your team or you barely ever saw them. Football has moved on and now you can watch every game on TV. If teams were only allowed supporters that lived near to the stadiums and could afford to get a season ticket it would be stupid. The whole "you don't live close enough to be a real fan" is complete BS and I would bet that plenty of people who support every team in the league have fans that say that who also have a team that is closer to their home than "their team".

If someone moves to the UK and wants to support England then good for them. I wouldn't think to say "you're not from around here, you plastic fan".

I agree that clubs would rather have 100 fans who spend money on the club than 1000 who just love watching United and that is sad but thats what happens when money gets involved. You evolve or die. You keep up with progress or you sink into obscurity. If you don't play the game you won't even get to play after a while.

I wont be surprised if this goes ahead.

It seems way serious now

I am the same but that is entirely because the clubs don't give much of a **** about those games. Its nothing to do with there being little on the line. 90% of the league games mean nothing ultimately. They are a tiny fraction of the season and are in themselves largely irrelevant. I don't bother watching the EL vs CL winners game because neither club takes it seriously and its usually played at the pace of a friendly. If both teams wanted to win it and it was likely to be a good game I would 100% watch it.

I think you're right, just a exercise of the bigger clubs wanting more Money. Just looking like extortion which makes it so ugly.

Id like to think a lot of the managers/players will speak out but they wont. All bought and paid for, except Jose :p.

Jose has been bought and paid for 10x over. I saw something earlier saying that his compensation from clubs since 2007 has been £97m or something similar. Thats not salary, thats compensation for sacking him.

No more or less ugly than the smallest sides trying to block relegation and promotion from the PL 12 months ago. The sooner people realise that nobody cares about anybody else and they're all in it for themselves, the better. So many people act shocked and disgusted everytime these things happen and they shouldn't be, it's been going on for decades.
