Because plenty of teams would go into tire saving mode (if the modelling shows 0 pit stop strategy is the fastest when accounting for pit loss) if they weren't forced to do at least 1 pit stop which is the last thing anyone wants. It may suck for Albon but the rules are there and everyone has to adhere to it, it's not guaranteed he would have finished deeper in the points if other teams went 0 pitstop strategy as well.

That could genuinely be just about the worst defence of a position I've ever seen on this forum. And I was there when deuse tried to claim that the lap record was broken at every single round, every single year in MotoGP and Moto2 and Moto3. That's really quite an achievement.

For clarity. You're arguing that a wildly artificial bit of meddling - making drivers use two different tyre compounds during a race - is preferable to not mandating that and allowing Formula One Grand Prix motor racing teams to decide how best to run a Formula One Grand Prix, yeah?
 
Gotta agree with @JRS on this one. Always hated the 'use 2 different compounds' rule. One of them will be the better choice for the track/car combo so why would you want to use something that's definitively worse?

If you're worried about 0 stop races then make events have a mandatory pitstop or two. Easy.
 
They need at least 1 tyre change to avoid a Kimi Nurburgring 2005 situation. I remember that to this day; awful!

umm, apart from the fact that SS-89 is correct... :confused: If teams can see that staying out until the end because the hard is still performing well enough then of course they'd end up not pitting as we saw in today's race that was a possible strategy. There would be few races where it would be viable but teams absolutely would extend a run if the data stacks up. The rule is good because it encourages teams to be more 'racey' and push their tyres rather than spend a whole race in tyre saving mode. I know what all fans would rather watch.

Its almost as if since that year they copied the Mercedes that they've forgotten how to design a car.... Racing Point / Force India always seemed to be quick and decent on a low budget but all the money and glitz of the Stroll take-over and Aston re-brand seems to have done nothing so far, its almost like we've seen with other decent mid-field teams when they get taken over like Sauber (BMW), Stewart (Jaguar) and to some extent BAR (Honda)

I wonder if the compound thing is also to encourage the tyre supplier in some way, i.e actually give them some scope for development, etc with different compounds, etc - no mandatory change they could just supply 1 grade of dry tyre - not sure you would get too many tyre companies all that interested in doing that.
 
They would need to very carefully design the tyres to encourage different strategies.
Three compounds per race might make it harder but I can imagine a scenario where the delta between two compounds means the two x softs is slightly faster over race distance (including the time in the pits) than 1 x hard.

In practice, you’ll probably end up with all/most teams on the same strategy and far fewer overtakes.

Can we start a dedicated thread for everyone to moan about Max, its getting annoying for the rest of us that every race thread turns into the same anti-Max / Abu Dhabi 2021 crap - its done and over

I like the tyre rule. Well. Its not ideal but I think everyone on one compound would be worse. Happy to give it a try for a few races. But not sure if it would work.
 
I've always thought that the tyres should be - a hard that can last all race, a medium that can last half and a soft that can last a third - all engineered to get you to the end in about the same time; you stop as you want to, including not at all.

The current 'must use 2 different compounds' really just pushes everyone into the same conclusion - even more so as we know don't have to start on the qualifying tyre.
