Golf Thread

Club champs didn't go as well as I'd hoped, just managed to scrape a couple of rounds in the eighties (89/87). The only positive was my putting, averaged 30 putts per round over the two days.

Out in the midweek roll up today. Course now crazy firm and burnt out. Two birdies on the front nine which was very welcome. Unfortunately two dreadful 6i approaches which cost me four shots between them. That and a dreadful three putt on sixteen put paid to any hopes of winning. Ended up with 35pts playing off 12. Will be a nice counter (13.5 diff) for my handicap which I continue to chip away at. Should be down to 13.2 tomorrow :) A few more free shots before my two really good rounds come off and I go back up :p
 
Lost our doubles match last night - we both played very poorly.... To be fair neither pair played very well - it was a pillow fight for sure.

Struggles off the tee continue - can't find a fairway at the moment - either big high cut or straight left pull.... Horrible feeling.

Also greens are bone dry at our place - can't even land a wedge on them without it bouncing over/long etc

Greens are mental over this side as well.

Played on Sunday and had to play a ridiculously high 60° that landed slap-bang on the green after coming down almost vertically - not even a sniff of a pitchmark on the green and still rolled off...

Early game today. Heating up out there.....

Better, positive stuff. Short game was excellent, really really good. 9 single putts today, 6 of them all thanks to good chips/up and downs etc.

Shot 80 gross for 73 net.

2 birdies, 7 pars, 7 bogies, 2 doubles. Both doubles from poor tee shots (lost balls) - rough is mental - greens terribly slow, but brick hard.
 
Played comp today which was challenging, not sure if I'll get disqualified or they'll just leave as an NR
Playing medal I hit my first tee shot well, saw it down so went to find it and couldn't so back the t I went (why didn't I just play a bloody provisional god knows) I only took my driver, tee and the ball... Proceeded to do something I hardly ever do and duffed it into the thick rough... So with driver in hand I'm thinking oh FFS it's going to be one of those days so will pick up and enjoy the round with no pressure. A chap who wasn't yet playing asked me if I wanted to use his wedge which in the that moment I didn't think and said oh yeh thanks whilst walking around I nr'd but was thinking you plonker what was I thinking (I wasn't I guess) now the other guy was not yet playing and when he did play he had a cracking round and at the moment is clearly top. Clubhouse are currently in complete confusion if he gets disqualified as well, which they said in play yeh absolutely but as he wasn't in play they don't know.
Gutted for the chap if it's me accepting his club that causes him to dq. As it's captains day the presentation is later today so be awkward if they do dq him.
What makes it all more awkward is he's down to be out with me in next weeks comp. So could be interesting.
Live and learn for me only been back into golf since November so not overly versed with the rules.
Assume they'll dq me as they should but does that have any impact beyond that usually ? Hardly like I was maliciously trying to gain an advantage
 
My level is all over the place at the moment but I've played 3x9 hole rounds in the last week and scored 42, 51, 45, so I think I'm improving at least. The 45 today was with two lost balls due to bad bounces into horrendous rough so definitely left quite a bit out there. Had a lesson yesterday which has resulted in a huge improvement with the driver, no more slice!
 
Might be a stupid question about a ruling but I'm curious nonetheless.

Mate and I played this morning and the course had a large patch of bushes (gorse, etc.) that they've mostly cut away but it's starting to grow back and some bushes are still there. It's marked with blue stakes so free relief - if you were to lose a ball in this area, would it count as a penalty drop or would you be able to drop another ball with relief considering it's GUR?

Ended up in this situation this morning and got me curious to what the official ruling would be!

If it's known or virtually certain that the ball was lost in GUR you can take a drop with no penalty.

Agree - you have a 2 shot penalty but the player loaning you the wedge for the shot doesn't get any penalty.

If a club taken out of play is another player’s club, that other player may continue to use the club.

Golf and Skiing

Just on my last day of a skiing holiday and I was wondering if being good on skis would make you a better putter.

You certainly need to have a good eye for the lie of the land - otherwise you end up flat on your rear end - as have I many times over the past few days.

Turning that question on its head I can say that being able to read a green (my putting game isn't too bad) in no way seems to help you from embarassing incidents whilst posing for group photos with the family out on the slopes

You'd be convinced that it's only Rory that's playing right now based on Sky coverage...

Edit: turns out there's two channels - one obviously only for McIlroy and another for everyone else.

Another poor ball striking round - 84 gross. At least handicap is going up to a more acceptable level currently.

Lots of golf in the next few weeks - quarter final county handicap team matches / Our big Open comp / Club Champ handicap semi finals etc

NEEEEEEEEEEED to find practice time.

Thanks I spent a chunk of time reading it later that day and that's all i took from it too, as i NR'd the round didn't really make a difference. The person who lend me it ended up with no penalty in the end coming just outside the top 3. It so happens someone did get DQ'd that day though... captains day so a lot around near the end and they put a 5 on the score card for the last hole but those watching saw him take 3 shots out the bunker and it takes two to get there so they tried purposely cheating. Didn't think that kind of thing happens.

I played on Friday and a slice has come along, played comp on Saturday and just couldn't not slice a ball, about half way around i left the driver in the bag and had to use a 5 iron of the t. Played today and first shot was just inbounds down the left, 2nd out of bounds left blah blah lost 6 balls but had my first round where i've got more than one birdie. Generally really happy with the short game at the moment.
The slice was being caused by an out to in swing, 0 idea why it appeared but happy its gone.
