I think the major problem with having someone in the room when you are trying to chat with women on the internet is them being your girlfriend, in which case spraffing some spew into a forum while they feed the cats next to you is probably good crack for disguising your frantic keying efforts...

To get anywhere on POF do you have to send crap loads of messages? Is it like job interviews, where you might apply for 50 and only get one reply?

I don't feel it's my place to say, and please don't take this the wrong way. But change your "about me" section. Just make it more casual, don't say anything that might put a female off, let them find out about your failings later on. Don't make it too long, just like 2 maybe 3 paragraphs about what is interesting about you, don't go OTT on info or else you'll struggle for conversation with someone when you do meet them.
Think about it like this, if you were going to buy a dog, you'd probably go check out the ad that said "Great dog, really friendly and doesn't bark." The fact that it ***** everywhere all the time is something that you'll learn later on. Close the sale, then start the fail.

Pics - not liking 4th pic, you look uncomfortable. Replace last pic with a pic of someone punching you for real (or just replace with a 'normal' pic..)

Here is the profile text I use for mine, maybe anyone struggling to write something can adapt it a little:
Light-hearted, nothing negative mentioned (I see no reason to ever mention negative things about yourself), and gives a little of my character without going over the top. I used to try and be much more clever in what I wrote, but in the end people aren't looking for literary displays of genius, they just want to know that you can string a sentence together, have some interests, and know a little about what you want in life. Seems to get me a fair few replies... but my photos are decent so that helps I guess.
So, about me. I think i'm not bad looking, intelligent, with a sharp (though slightly dark and sarcastic) sense of humour. I love to go out and party, but i'm also just as happy curling up on the sofa with a good movie or book. I like to ski, mountain bike, scuba dive, go to the cinema, read a good book, write about things that interest me, and listen to music among other things. I mainly listen to Rock, Pop, Britpop and Dance/Electro, and i'm not a big fan of rap or heavy metal. I'm also a nightmare when I get too hungry, I need to be fed quickly or I get very grumpy. Oh yeah, and i'm not such a bad cook and masseur either.
I'm looking for a girl who is sexy and intelligent with a good sense of humour... an independent girl who is confident about herself and her body (no super shy girls please, that's not my thing). Someone feminine with a little class and elegance, but who isn't afraid to let her hair down, have fun, and maybe break a nail sometimes. Skiing or Snowboarding is a definite bonus as like I said earlier, I love to ski in Winter!
While it says "Im looking for a relationship" on my profile... my philosophy is "take it as it comes". To start with I just want casual drinks and dates, and then if it progresses into anything else then that's fine; but I think the harder you look for something or the more you try to force it, then the less likely you are to find it. Best to relax, take it easy, and see what happens.

i'm in the process of reducing mine further. i think having more then one photo is a waste of time. i was trying to think how do i look at girls profiles, it literally is just one photo (needs to clearly show them) and then a quick scan of profile and i'm interested or not, and i imagine it's the same for them, so more photos only add more options where they may have liked the first one but then put off from the second/third etc.
i'm no pro and only ever had 1 girl meet up with me who has now called it off so take that into consideration.
i also realised most girls i message are "online" (may be viewing though a phone) so feel perhaps this is the same situation, where online people show more often against people who haven't been on for a few days. i will try leaving the page open when doing something else to test and see what happens. i noticed before that the 2 messages i've only ever received from girls i didn't approach first were whilst i was online. this could be a coincidence.

Man I seem to be attracting a fair few cute 23 year olds on the dating sites at the moment which just seems odd (im very early 30's)... didn't realise they went for older guys at that age, thought it was more mid/late 20's. In real life its usually fine as I can turn on the charm and age is never mentioned until the hook is set, but online the age is clearly stated so id have though much less likely for someone so young to go for it, but clearly not.
She seems alright actually, no stunner but cute, and tats are always a bonus as long as they aren't on her forehead. The profile makes her sound intelligent, independant, laid back and pretty cool too.
