8 Packs 4ghz 32m Challenge win full Haswell 4770K Bundle.

Fear the mighty x58 :p

I forgot what a pain it is to clock this board :p There just isn't enough granularity to fine-tune the memory frequency... I can only choose the CPU to be even numbered multiples of the BCLK, (22x, 20x, 18x) etc, and I can only choose 3x, 4x or 5x the BCLK for the memory frequency. For a 4Ghz CPU clock this pretty much puts me at 915Mhz (22x183 with "5x" mem multiplier as above).

The memory controller on the CPU seems to hit a hard wall at 950Mhz. I can boot up and run 32Mb pi at 950Mhz (3.8Ghz CPU) with 9-9-9-24, even on 1.4v. But at 955Mhz I can't even get into windows no matter the timings (even CAS11 with 1.65v it won't get into Windows). Tried adjusting all sorts of voltages, but nothing seems to dent to 950Mhz wall.

Anyway, so that's pretty much the frequency I have to run at - all that's left is to tweak the timings :)

Memory is Corsair XMS rated at 2000Mhz 9-9-9-24.

I will fire up my mighty X58 rig later and give it a blast.:D

wazza300: 8m 00.689s - i7 3770k "Samsung" 2209Mhz 9-10-10-13 1T

should be "Samsung" 2209Mhz 9-10-10-19 1T

@Raikiri leave cmos battery out a good thirty minutes, might need overnight if its badly crashed

I've reset everything to defaults (battery/24pin/power cable out for 10 mins).

I might enter my Celeron HTPC I'm using at the moment for the lols.
you didn't try resetting the cmos via the jumper/button on your mobo?

Nice :D

Well, here's a new one for you to aim for:

Despite the fact that I can't get any higher frequency from this board / chip, the sticks themselves seem to be quite nice. I did a run at CAS 7 1T, but for some reason the score was 5 seconds slower  (nothing else was changed).

After that the board started rebooting even at settings that were stable half an hour earlier, so I decided to give it a rest. I might have a play with tertiary timings tomorrow, see if I can beat 9 mins before I migrate to Haswell.

9 mins seems a decent target for X58, but I'm sure you can crack it!

never heard of a mobo without a cmos jumper?

What board is it

Gigabyte Z68XP UD3P, I've looked at the board and through the manual but can't see one.

I'd love to know, slower IPC, slower memory and looser timings compared to the others it's beaten :p

I have no idea. However some motherboards are simply faster than others, the P5K Deluxe running the same settings was 46 seconds faster than the next quickest board and almost 2 minutes faster than the slowest. I'll find the review later if you like.

2 metal pins there

  1. unplug your psu from the wall
  2. turn off the psu at the back of your pc.
  3. Use something metal to connect those prongs together for a couple of
seconds. (like a screw driver tip)

Your bios should be reset to defaults when you next boot and your board will likely tell you the cmos was reset and ask you wether you want to "load optimised defaults" or "enter the bios"

For the leaderboard my ddr3 is g skill ripjaw z 2133mhz 2x4gb.

When I get from work I might try to beat that sandy bridge score....

My X58 entry

I could probably get a tiny bit more if I tuned the 2nd and 3rds

Edit

Memory is the old style Corsair Dominators 7-8-7-20

Ahah, will try it. I saw that but it says FPESD next to it, which is helpful :D

Yay for x58 :D

Interesting though, that's very similar to what I got at 7-8-8-21 1T. For some reason 8-8-8-21 1T was a few seconds faster.

I still have a lot to learn about overclocking :p

I had to recover mine the other day

for gigabyte z77 without a bios switch you have to hold down front panel pwr switch, then flick on the psu power switch and immediately turn it off,do that around two times then let go of front panel power switch and turn on at psu switch and press front panel power button once

then you should see a message saying recovering main bios with backup bios, once done reboot and update the bios again
