What sort of V is fine for putting through ram? I had to use 1.7v to get that to pass just shy of 2400 CL9.

Probably the motherboard, possibly the RAM (1.73v was a little over what they suggest). I'll have to find someone with a DDR3 motherboard around that I can test the RAM on.

At the moment it half boots, detects the CPU then freezes and restarts. Cold booting is an issue on this board but I've reset everything to defaults (battery/24pin/power cable out for 10 mins).

I might enter my Celeron HTPC I'm using at the moment for the lols.

Have a look at your tRFC setting, see if you can reduce it

Fear the mighty x58

I forgot what a pain it is to clock this board There just isn't enough granularity to fine-tune the memory frequency... I can only choose the CPU to be even numbered multiples of the BCLK, (22x, 20x, 18x) etc, and I can only choose 3x, 4x or 5x the BCLK for the memory frequency. For a 4Ghz CPU clock this pretty much puts me at 915Mhz (22x183 with "5x" mem multiplier as above).

The memory controller on the CPU seems to hit a hard wall at 950Mhz. I can boot up and run 32Mb pi at 950Mhz (3.8Ghz CPU) with 9-9-9-24, even on 1.4v. But at 955Mhz I can't even get into windows no matter the timings (even CAS11 with 1.65v it won't get into Windows). Tried adjusting all sorts of voltages, but nothing seems to dent to 950Mhz wall.

Anyway, so that's pretty much the frequency I have to run at - all that's left is to tweak the timings


Memory is Corsair XMS rated at 2000Mhz 9-9-9-24.

Yes but the point is, the person who enters with the best setup at 4GHz is obviously going to win.

A 4GHz Phenom II superPI score is hardly going to compare to a 4GHz 3970X score is it? It's not about "lots of CPU's can do 4GHz".

the top at the end of the month will be all haswell , look at my time with default memory timings and clocks compared to some people on last gen that actually bothered t over clock their ram
