10GB vram enough for the 3080? Discuss..

You know initially I said it would be but I have changed my mind. Last night I ran up Monster Hunter ( which I haven't done in a while ), activated the high res texture pack, changed the resolution for my "nearly" 4K monitor and immediately got a system warning that I was nearing 8GB, which is the current limit of my GPU (2070S). It's really made me think that I want a 3080S or 3080Ti, whichever is first... in other words, more RAM!!!

FS2020 vram usage on 3080 - Ultra 4K flying over NYC... some definite stuttering in places, no wonder they didn't bother with RT, generally 28-35fps. I also saw RAM usage at 22.5GB

Right click on the graph, properties, go down to graph limits, set the maximum for this graph to 10240 (ie 10GB).

Btw, keep in mind this is total allocated GPU memory, not required GPU memory. Which means it includes system overhead, any additional VRAM the driver might allocate because it thinks it'll need it, etc. You get a better sense of per-process memory in use with the GPU dedicated memory usage graph from the newest Afterburner betas.

Ok thanks for tip.

I just spent the weekend building and setting up a PC for a VR sim racing rig. The 3080 in the build ran out of GPU horsepower in 3 of the 6 titles I installed.

It ran out of vram in 0 of the 6 titles. For this use case, the GPU itself is the weak link, not the vram buffer.

Has anyone tried out Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War? Noticed the game has an optional download HQ Texture pack and am seeing 16GB total video memory usage at 5120x1440, even with 85% max video memory usage set in the game options. OS is using about 750MB of video memory, so the game appears to be using at least 15GB.

The above is using the Dedicated video memory allocation metric from HWINFO64.

EDIT

I know someone will ask for it, so here's a per process video memory usage from MSI Afterburner. I'd only been playing for a minute or so, but usage was already past 14GB actual usage.

EDIT 2

Also, you don't need this per process monitoring, you can just check what video memory is in usage by the OS prior to launching the game, and then subtract that off the dedicated usage as shown in HWINFO64. I've validated the results using MSI Afterburns per process and it's spot on.

I run out of VRAM on my 3080 in Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War at 4k. Had to lower a few settings to get to 9.5GB.

3080 10GB is a good decision for 4K if you plan to keep the card for at year or more. RX6800/6900 or 3080ti are much better options.

I did wonder, cheers for the clarification from a 3080 perspective.

I knew from my time using a 5700 XT with 8GB that it was not difficult to saturate 8GB of video memory using HQ Textures and experience issues, despite having the FPS grunt available.

He is likely just looking at allocated memory and getting confused. End of the day the game even uses more than 16GB if that is how one wants to look at it. If it was the actual used memory then there would be news all about it over the internet and you would have a few here having a field day :)

It's like Resident Evil 2 Remake a few years ago when it came out would say my 12gb on the Titan XP was not enough. Some get confused seeing this and lower settings :p

I assume the 3070 and below require you to turn down settings due to lack of processing performance, which in turn reduces the VRAM use/requirement.

Why assume? Surely we have enough owners on the forum in order that we could get some feedback on which games need the settings turned down.

In terms of the the subject of this thread, I have owned a 3080 since September and I haven't had to turn any settings down in any game due to a lack of Vram.

I'm assuming because I'm not a 3070 owner, and I can't be bothered to go through all the threads gathering data :p

@Dave2150 - Perhaps you can clarify if you saw any issues and how you measured usage?

Btw you don't need per process monitoring, you can just note how much video memory is in use prior to launching the game, then subtract that amount from what the allocation amount gets up to in game. Doing this provides the exact same value as MSI Afterburners Per Process monitoring - I've tested it.

The menu option says that if you notice any stuttering or hitching to reduce from Ultra to High, or to reduce the allocated VRAM from 90% to 80% - But doing that latter can result in downgraded textures or pop-in.

@TNA Sweet, I have just managed to buy a 3080 FE!

Can you tell me if the card comes with the right power connector dongle or do I need to order one?

---

Well it's not confirmed yet, but I ordered it and it went through, but it's not a home run just yet.
