10GB vram enough for the 3080? Discuss..

That's not a particularly good faith representation. I've made fairly well informed arguments for the topic of this thread, by both my own experimentation and collecting evidence and presenting it clearly. It's not tedious for me, quite the opposite it's stimulating to learn new things, learn the nuance of a topic, and learn how to upgrade and configure software to get a more accurate picture of metrics for things like vRAM use. I've learned a whole bunch both from this thread, but also the research it has forced me to do.

If you find it tedious I suggest you find some self control and simply not read the thread, why are you reading something you find tedious?

OK Rainman...

The only full Ray Tracing game is Control. A 3080 cannot run this game at 4k @ 60fps with RT off or on.[1] It also cant get good performance without DLSS resolution being set to 1440P or lower. [1] Thus that is what to expect from future games. 10GBs vRAM is fine for a 1440p internal render that then uses DLSS v2 to produce a 4K image. This then provides the 4k @ 60fps experence.

Metro Exodus also wont hit 4k 60fps at maximum settings. [2] Most other games like Crysis Remaster will really hit the performance wall at 4k.[3] I think 10GBs of vRAM is enough for a 1440p native rendering resolution upscaled by DLSS v2 to 4k. This is also the only route to getting good performance at 4k and having any change of hitting 60fps in future at 4k with RT enabled. We will know for sure when Cyberpunk 2077 is released.

Need to remember that Control is made by Remedy, a game studio that is notorious for releasing in optimized mess of games - their last "masterpiece" Quantum Break only just manages to run at 60fps at 4k on a RTx3090 - a game from 2016 and that doesn't have Ray Tracing

Indeed. Funny thing is the graphics are not even that good. Look at the character models. The one’s from Crysis probably look better. Lol.

Crysis Remastered has no DLSS v2 support atm.

4k cannot hit 60fps.

At 1440p with DLSS v2 it looks like you could hit 4k 60fps but without DLSS v2 dont expect to run at 4k 60 fps. This is just like Control.

Before closing, Crytek revealed that Crysis Remastered will not ship with DLSS 2.0 support. The team plans to add support for this tech via a post-launch update.

Right, more examples that you'll run out of GPU horsepower long before the vRAM will run out. I might grab Crysis Remastered when my 3080 arrives and do proper tests of how much vRAM these modes use.

It's worth investigating that if the paradigm really has shifted and many people are expecting certain amounts of vRAM and that amount is more than you can use. Then what would be an appropriate rule of thumb now? My bet is that it's actually much more closely linked to your GPU speed. Like if the GPU is 30% faster than the last gen then you probably want about +30% more vRAM, rather than doubling to say +100% more vRAM.

Best way to disabuse people of these old patterns is to work out what the new one is and have some evidence for it.

An RTX 3070 16GB was always going to be an oldly placed SKU.

Why would Nvidia make a cheaper card with more memory to compete with a 3080.

They will probably save these for the refresh next year.

Hmm. 3080 20GB cancelled, meanwhile 3080ti 20GB (TSMC 7nm) on the table :p

Either that or big Navi is another big fail, and Nvidia have no competition again.

What if AMD have a 16GB card that's as fast as the 3080 for $50 less? Who's going to spend an extra $200 for Nvidia's 20GB offering?

AMD doesn't really need to match Nvidia GB for GB. They just need to offer enough that people don't think they will run out, and 16GB seems like more than enough to get that job done.

I think something like this would also get Nvidia to cancel, or at least greatly cut back, production of a 20GB card.

I'm guessing go AMD, the AMD leaks are starting to get quite convincing now this close to launch
Let’s hope so. Would love to see Nvidia lose the performance crown. If not at least get a battering in every GPU apart from the 3090.

3080 (exact same design) would be significantly faster on TSMC's 7nm process. This is likely the card they'll release with 20GB VRAM.

Current 3080 is on a very bad Samsung 8nm process, that has high power draw, lower clocks and lower density vs TSMC.

I think many will by a 20GB 3080TI, that's at least 10% faster than a 3090, less power hungry, for £1000-1500.

If it's on TSMC, it probably wasn't coming anytime soon, and I would want at least 50% over the 3080 before I even consider spending double the 3080's price.
