10GB vram enough for the 3080? Discuss..

Is the 3080 a true 4K card ? When you add heavy RT it looks more like a 1440p card IMO.

Good question. It does well in most games at 4k. RT as we know is very hard on any current GPU. But there is DLSS. RT as much as DLSS, if it's well implemented then it's OK. But there in lies the question. Is it well implemented in each particular game.

The issue is with todays game releases is that most, even by AAA developers are usually in an Alpha state, beta at best. You pay full MSRP to play on release to have the worst experience. And to get the best of the worst experience for anew game you need to pay double!

I've stopped buying games on release. Far too many older games that were also issue ridden on release, but are now finely polished and free DLC, cheap and somewhere towards where the developer envisaged.

Same.

The only thing this VRAM argument has taught me is how poorly made some games are.

FC6 wants every bit of available VRAM but looks and plays terrible. Then you get a recent game like GotG, which looks incredible, has a real RT implementation, and doesn’t require some poorly made HD texture pack, yet it barely uses half my VRAM.

Yes, open world vs not, but there are plenty other examples. People shouldn’t be encouraging rushed and poorly made games, and then saying the hardware is the problem.

People squeaking about one game on release A YEAR after the 3080 was released, are just trying to make themselves feel better that they couldn't get 90% of what they have at half the price of the cards they were forced to purchase due to demand. Same lot squeaking at the 3080 release when they were were scalped by retailers at only £100 over MSRP and said they'd never be scalped. The 3090 is the biggest scalp by Nvidia ever, for only 10% (on release) extra than the 3080 , these people got hit hard with FOMO. Pained to see people on forums with cards far superior even at 4k to what was available prior. You can see the stinging pain with those justifying with 1 game that doesn't play well on the card as the overarching finaliity to the question posed for this thread.

That said I'd have done the same but can accept that if I had, when I came to sell it 2nd hand I'd be making more of a loss than a 3080. But it was the pandemic, locked in doors and gaming as a hobby. Well, I made sure I got a 3080 when I saw both the 3090 and 6900XT results as the price vs performance uplift was terrible.3090 owners looking to get the next gen will lose considerbly more under resale value. Same as the 3080 and mining. It diod most of what the top card would do and take half the effort from the card to pay back.

Still find it funny that the biggest squealer hadn't owned one and who's replies are little more than cut and paste from others. Nothing of any substrance to ever back up anything she's saying. Hilarious. Spends most of her weekend getting the taste of AMDshrouts backside from her mouth.

I have a 3080, and it's great. But it has, in certain scenarios, limits. That's also fine.

My brother has a 6800xt, and it's great. But it has, in certain scenarios, limits. That's also fine.

Calm down chaps and chappettes...

Agreed. That is why it is surprising seeing tommybhoy and a few others posts. They seem to get wound up that people are fine with 10gb for some reason

That is because you are free to your own opinion, however, if it differs from mine then it is wrong and you must change it regardless of how you concluded said opinion :p

More mood swings than your typical pregnant wife in this thread.

We need more level headed Bill's in this world.

I see we’re mid-way through our quarterly cycle. Time to re-post this again (think this is the third time posting this :D) for any new users to the discussion wondering what all the emotion on display is all about.
  • 3080 owner/forum user asks for an example where 10gb is not enough.
  • Example provided. (Far Cry 6 4K/Max Settings with HD Texture pack).
  • A few 3080 owners’ debate/deny provided example.
  • Provided example validated by tech press outlets, game developer and 3080 owners.
Once we've reached this stage, one of two things can occur, acceptance or denial.
  • Acceptance
  • 3080 owners confirm the following issues using the actual example provided:
    • FPS collapses down to single digits/Low FPS.
    • Bad frame times/stuttering.
    • Resolved by disabling the HD Texture Pack.
    • Resolved by using FSR.
  • Denial
  • 3080 owner enters the thread and proclaims one or more of the following:
    • Local system issue/game runs fine for me (in my two minute video recording).
    • Tech press examples not valid, as HUB did not see any issue when using lower than maximum settings in their 30 second benchmark run.
    • Provided example does not count as game is buggy/poor and or provided example does not count because a different game only uses 8GB or less of memory at 4K max settings.
    • I don't play the provided example, at the resolution and settings required/I only game below 4K/use image reconstruction/lower image quality settings, based on that I have always run out of grunt before memory.
    • Must be a game issue/developers will fix it eventually.
  • The cycle will start over when one or both of the following happens again.
    • A new owner/user enters the discussion to ask for an example where 10GB is not enough.
    • There is a new game released that may require more than 10GB of video memory at 4K maximum settings.

Second category third bullet point down. Anyone with capacity can move on from this matter, it seems the people that own the actual hardware get all defensive. There is really no point as I guarantee you the club that argue over it so much will be sporting Ada cards within months so will say it weren't an issue.
Not quite, myself and Tommybhoy own the hardware and are happy with 10gb. More than I've ever had!

Oh lordy, reading the last 1-2 pages of this thread... equating wealth to being able to overspend on a GPU, is this what you are clutching to now..... Suppose it's because we still have jack ****/weak as **** arguments on the vram topic

Only ones continually squealing are folk who've never owned one. Guess I'd have bought a 3090 mid pandemic if I couldn't get a 3080. Whilst I could've easily afforded a 3090 I didn't want to pay double for (at the time of 3090 release) an extra 10% performance.

When the next gen is released, the 2nd hand price of a 3090 wont hold double of a 2nd hand 3080. 2nd hand price uplift will be more relative with their uplift in performance.20% more than a 3080 - max.

Exactly.

grim = well it's grim
gpuerilla = admitted he wanted one far more than the 3090 but couldn't get it, hence all the mining to try and justify the purchase + make money back
tommy = salty because it took him 1-2 years to get a 3080 and think he overpaid for a 3070 AIB before that

Quite funny too, how when I upload footage showing a 3080 having zero fps issues/spikes (where as bang4bucks 3090 had frame spikes) in things like re village etc. where as matts 6900xt is showing texture issues etc., it goes very quiet.... can you imagine how vocal said ones would have been if the footage showed what they wanted to see  :D Remember it's all about the narrative ;)

And even then that one said games plays fine on my end and you have several 3090 owners reporting fps drops now on the ubi forums :D

Wouldn't say FC 6 was terrible looking tbf though, it's decent, at least in the beach/jungle areas, the city/towns looked ps4 like. My main complaint with it was just how completely and utterly empty the game world was.

Said person also keeps on listing games with supposed issues yet looking at several sites (of which they refer to constantly for the FC 6 fiasco), those sites aren't showing any issues and then you have likes of myself who has uploaded fair bit of footage showing no issues at all in those newly listed supposed titles and then when pointing out that a 3090 or amd equivalent gpu is experiencing exact same issues, it goes very quiet or that's ignored because it doesn't fit the narrative

3080 is the better gpu for 4k "overall" too, just have a look at TPU and HUBs 50 game average compared to the amd competing gpu i.e. 6800xt and 3080 comes out faster overall and that's not even factoring in RT titles/settings except for metro ee.

I also find it interesting to see that the 3080 and 3070 appear to be extremely popular, from gibbo in the other thread:

Hi there

Without analysing the data too heavily and the fact it changes from month to month, but in April the number one spot would be a very close call between 3080 and 3070Ti, as thousands of both sold during April, 3rd spot is most likely 3070 and 6600, but again limited due to lack of stock to get the true picture.

If we go back to say January/February which was before the big NVIDIA price moves OcUK did the actual top seller (units) was the card everyone hates, 6500 XT. :D

This April we shipped more GPU's than we did last April during the height of the pandemic and shortages, which says to us gamers are buying in huge volumes again and to be fair to OcUK during March and April we have pretty much generally lead the way with price drops which of course now shows in an excellent sales performance that looks to continue into May. :)

Seems like folks value RT and/or DLSS more than vram or maybe it must be down to the vast majority being brainwashed by Jenson....

Anyway back on topic....

[18 month update]
Still ok with 10GB.
[over-and-out]

Pretty much....

3080 FE has been by far the best card for the money I have bought in a long time (especially when factoring in how much I got it for by selling on previous gpus), it absolutely nails both 3440x1440 and 4k but I'm bored now, want something new and shiny to play with and some more RT games ;)

Its as Matt has put nicely though. When the debate was show us where this is an issue, we have all explored that and can see where the item evolves. There is no argument at that point. We also know how to circumvent it so again no need to argue. Its done, your earlier post was as it should be. Anyone stirring or baiting weird sides to sling mud is only really doing so at that point as they have an axe to grind.

I have no axe to grind, I got FC6 to see for myself... And found that I had an issue at 4k. A couple of other small points too, but basically i agree that vram is the limitation.

I still consider 10gb enough on the whole, but this was a definite, reproducible issue I encountered. Like I said, certain scenarios and all that.

Is Far Cry 6 an AMD sponsored title? If so, it’s a bit fishy that it’s so VRAM intensive.
It is indeed.

And if you look on ubi forums, you'll see 3090 owners reporting fps drops too and there was a thread on here with a 3090 experiencing drops as well but of course, when it came to them, apparently it is a "system/local issues"....

But nope, it's only vram and absolutely nothing else at play here.... :D

On a separate note, was playing far cry new dawn over the weekend and imo, it looks better than FC 6, textures are defo much more detailed. Looks glorious in HDR on the AW QD-oled panel.

Waste of time mate. Bias seems to be the cause of all this imo.

At the end of the day nothing said here changes my thoughts. The 3080 is imo the best GPU this gen. It has a very nice balance. Sure there maybe one or two games where if you load optional texture there might be an issue. But who cares? The real question is, are there any games worth playing that needs more than 10GB? Answer is no imo.

We already discussed to death why the card only has 10gb and had they put on more the price would go up. At the end of the day if you went 6080 XT you would be missing out on a whole lot more than FC6 optional textures. Yet we don't see anyone here making a dedicated thread about this and going on and on about it. But yeah, let's frame this as the 3080 crowd have an axe to grind or in denial etc

Funny thing is I think you are the only person in this whole forum that says FC6 works perfectly fine at 4K with the optional textures, yet some clearly try to make it look like there are many doing this for point scoring purposes.

Tbf there is a lot more games that will struggle on your 6900 over a 3080 10 with max settings.

Tbf there is a lot more games that will struggle on your 6900 over a 3080 10 with max settings.
If the 'lot more games' list is Cyberpunk2077, Control and Chernobylite etc , you are probably right tbf. That said, what is the point if neither are at playable FPS at 4K max settings? From what I have seen, nothing can handle these games at 4K max settings without serious compromises to image quality using reconstruction. The post you quoted is 4K Max Settings, no compromises.

Would be interested to compare performance tbh though, see how fast those 3080s really are at 4K max settings. If you start a new thread, I'm happy to put up some footage for comparison to see if your claim is true in a variety of games to even things out.

Having seen my 6900 XT performance vs 3080s, I'm confident overall the 6900 XT will be faster even with some Nvidia sponsored RT games thrown in to the mix to try and level the playing field a bit.

As an example in the FC6 benchmark, I'm over 40% faster than overclocked 3080s. Warzone is an even bigger margin, Forza series similar. If the games list is balanced, there will only be one winner in overall performance.
