£20 for windows 8 upgrade

You can do the upgrade from Windows 8 release preview so that is basically $40 for a brand new operating system

Can this be repeated in the future as long as I keep the ISO and key for the beta?

I don't want to be stuck with an upgrade disc in 2 years time that I cannot use to reinstall windows.

£20 on one machine isnt an issue, but how many of us have one machine?, if I migrated it would be laptop, netbook, server, 2 desktops pcs etc so everything talks well on the network, so it soon adds up

Lets face it we are nerds on the whole here, and I for one like things to be common, so would like upgrade all during the window (Oct to Jan)if the price is right, big big difference between £20 and £50 a pop

I am sure I read you CANNOT upgrade from the preview without having an existing license key, the initial blog was unclear and I am sure I read it has now been stated you WILL need a proper license

So are they not doing a home edition for £40-£60ish like they did with windows 7. Full install disc non upgrade? That pre-order price last time had everyone I know going legit for the first time.

Does anyone know if the rumoured "$40 upgrade from the preview to retail" without need for previous versions etc is/was legit?

Ahh, missed this before my post. Still unsure. If I need a previous key (at least pre XP) then I'll just source a cheap copy of windows 7.

Not sure it's that important as once you've installed you can do a Reset to factory settings which is a clean install from within Windows, and I'm sure the online upgrade will allow you to burn an image or disk.

So the only downside seems to be what's the pre-requisite for using the upgrade on a new disk. E.g. Install and install again...

Given Microsoft's pricing to date, I think those hoping to pick up a download copy of win8 for £20-£30 are the dictionary definition of "optimism" :)

Unless MS think they can make a fortune from the app store, they would be losing a huge sum of money compared to previous releases.

Even the student version of win7 was £40, and that was the most generous offer I've ever seen from MS (Office Pro Plus was also £40 for students.)

We'll see.

I'll get the student discount version...

I really hope it's not just upgrade only... does that mean everytime I do a clean install I have to install Win7 and then upgrade to 8.... What about when Windows (9?) comes out... will we then have to install win7 and upgrade to 9 every clean install or what? Just seems like Win7 is going to be needed for a loooong time to come..

I reckon it will be £30-£40 tops for the download version as it appears the boxed upgrade version will be £49.99

I looked a bit more. I dont think it has anything of value to add over win7. This is a very fragmented release it seems
