A Harry Potter thread.

Ian mcKellen never played dumbledore, he turned the role down to continue as Gandalf in LOTR

I know the original person to talk about IM was joking, which I do see and understand, but I heard this and wondered if anyone else had heard it or know if it was true or false:

Ian McKellen was in fact offered the part of Dumbledore after RH died, but IM and RH had been such enemies in real life (stemming from RH talking trash about IM's sexuality) that IM said that he could never portray a part that RH had done before him.

Have I been told a load of rubbish or has anyone else heard that?

Just home after seeing it

Enjoyed it, a nice finish to signify the unofficial end of my childhood.

I've read the books almost continuously since ~1997 and read them still a few times a year, emotional to finally see the back of the films which have very much being a guilty pleasure.

I'm not sure how I feel about the film properly, I'm a bit disappointed at the minute, I'll sleep on it.

Have you read the books ?

Have you seen the first 7 films ?

I had to explain massive chunks to friends who hadn't read the books (but seen the films)

See that then see the last part.

If you've read the books it "shouldn't" confuse you too much :p

It was amazing, I'm going to see it again. My girlfriend was sobbing all the way through. Bedtime now though as it's my graduation in just under 12 hours!

I wouldn't use the term "amazing" :p

I did tear up though :(

Watched the double last night, had to be up for work at 6am :(
Am shattered.

But HP7.2 was excellent, easily the best of the series.
In general film terms it'd get a 5/6 but HP terms it'd get 8/9. Very few bits actually felt to drawn away from the books, while they differed it wasn't a horrendous affair.

The one part I thought that was done brilliantly would Snapes final memories. Was quite a touching moment and done really well!

Also, time just flew while I was watching it. It felt like it was an hour and a half long!

Watched the midnight showing last night, had to be up at 6am also. Not feeling too bad at the moment!

Film was brilliant. Now, up until about a week ago I had never seen a single Harry Potter film in my life and I certainly havent read the books.

The other half really wanted to go and see this last one, so I decided to power through HP 1-7 last week. And I did enjoy them, number 2 though being the worst.

So with having the whole plot fresh in my mind, I really enjoyed last HP7:2. Id agree, it is the best one. Wasnt overly fussed on the 3D aspect though. Would have enjoyed it equally as much in 2D.

You should read the books Paul. W they're far superior. I'll try and give you my opinions later when I'm less shattered.

Also, why was Harry able to block the killing curse during the fight scenes? There is no defence against it except to move out of the way?

The only known counter-spell is Sacrificial protection. However, one may dodge the green bolt, block with physical barrier, or intercept the bolt with another spell. An explosion or green fire may result if the spell hits something other than a living target.

Well another thing is that Voldemorts wand is rightfully Harry's so it wont kill him. All V's spells are weaker because of this

I watched 7 part 1 in the run up to going to seeing the second part on Sunday, and it really makes you realise that no matter how strong the direction/production is (which is pretty excellent all round), the real weakness is in the source material. Book 7 in particular feels like they're on "train tracks" in the quest to defeat Voldemort... The books (and subsequently the films) unfold like a procession in terms of story-telling and plot development.
