ADSL Max Question?

1 x BT Voyager 220V modem/router FREE each : FREE

I've half a dozen or so of those routers lying in the house somewhere I never used. I think they only allow two lan port connections so your restricted to two computers.

Would be nice to know how well they perform as I might sell one or two :)

phoned today

said I had to pay my phone bill with my broadband , ala monthly standing order

and I had a 3 month contract since Ive been with BT for more than 12 months

Roughneck, I have a direct debit setup anyway so it went straight through and im happy with the service so I have no problems signing up for another 12 months.

Scream, sell them at a tenner each on ebay ;) People are bound to buy them, hehe

anyone got any max dsl upgrades yet

i want to see some stats before and after upgrade if poss!

Thanks Tim

I noticed that people on Zen already seem to have had their MAX ADSL lines activated already. Wonder how they managed to get regraded so fast.

Zen have been allowing orders to be placed for regrade for around a month already, so as soon as the product went live in the exchange the orders started shipping to BT straightaway.
However its nothing to be chuffed about at the moment. My line re-synced at 8meg yesterday at 3am, still only getting actual downloads/speedtests of just under 2meg (which I was on originally before the MaxDSL) coming on for 23 hours later. Zen recommended that it would take around 75 minutes for the change to be effected at BTs end after the exchange end was done. It appears no-one synced at 8meg is able to get over 2meg at the mo, although my upload has gone up to about 400kbps and people synced at slower speeds are getting up to around 3.5meg.
AFAIK this isnt the "re-syncing over 10 days malarky", it just appears they upgraded the user end but not out of the exchange or something yet as the sync speed hasnt changed once so far...

Anyone have any knowledge of eclipse because im thinking of moving ot them for there Maxdsl. Reason why is 50gb cap a month from hours of 6pm to 12 midnight and unlimited after seems a good deal for what i want but im not sure if they will provide me decent service. Over at adslguide just the same one person moans but dosnt mean everyone affected by it so hard to say. :)

So any past or present users here ?

Mine was upgraded early hours of tuesday morning and goto say it was a pretty poor start, syncs upto 5024 is best i had but speeds were 360kbs at the best, lots and lots of cutoffs but thats whats meant to happen.

This morning things have seemed to settle down, router is at 4544 / 488 done a few speed tests, i noticed the inc.overheads is on 4054 so not sure if i going to get a tiny increase in speed as yet. For reference bt's tester says i should get between 5-8 meg.

On Wednesday, 5th April, 2006 Your bandwidth measured as:

3.73 Mbps

which means you can download at 477.24 KB/sec. from our servers.

heres one off adslguide

Downstream 3754 Kbps (469.3 KB/sec) 4054 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 382 Kbps (47.8 KB/sec) 412 Kbps (inc. overheads)

At least one of the folks I've seen has been losing synch anything up to 4 times a minute, and neither Zen nor BT seem to want to do anything about it. Makes me glad I held fire.

Hmm, a good choice so far. I wonder how long it will be before BT do do omething about it. (They're not exactly know for promptness).

They can be prompt, but only once they actually admit that its a problem that is theirs to deal with. Thats where the delay comes in, you either point the finger of blame with enough evidence to say that its definately their fault. Optionally you can wait and it will miraculously fix itself and BT will claim that there was nothing wrong in the first place.
IMO of course, but based on ten years of looking after hundreds of ISDN links to retail stores up and down the country and dealing with BT as a premier customer on an almost weekly basis.

As a point of note, folks regrading or migrating (as Olly's doing) will mostly jump the queue over the folks waiting for bulk upgrades.
That's good news for me as I'm migrating to Zen when my contract is up next month.

I sent off an e-mail to Zen yesterday and they said that when I migrate to them then if my exchange is already upgraded to Max DSL (which it was on 31st March) then I should be put on the Max DSL service straight away.

AOL haven't got a clue as some customer support staff say that Platinum members will be upgraded first but this won't be completed until the end of June at the earliest and some say that they haven't heard of Max DSL which isn't surprising as they are based in India

It is supposed to be intermittent in the first few days to some extent until it gets the best sync speed for your line, faults can be reported to BT if it is disconnecting so much it is unusable but I would try and wait it out if possible as if it goes to BT they will probably just slow it down until you get a nice high margin/SNR, they will probably also turn interleaving on. So you may not get as higher speed as the automatic system would give you.

The data rate is another issue. The data rate has to catch up with the sync rate, according to BT this may take up to 3 days. This is I agree a bit un expected and maybe a botch on BTs part but the intermittency was expected tbh.

Nice MAX DSL info link.

My current 1MB contract with Pipex is 1 month away from completion and I would like to know what my options are

Because of my location and poor quality of my line I’ve only ever been able to support a 1MB connection, but I can now support up to 3MB with MAX according to BT/Pipex/Samknows? But what of traditional BB, does that cease to exist now? Will every service that you subscribe to be provided though the new MAX technology?

Basically, what I want to know is, can I now subscribe to any ‘traditional’ 2MB service whereas before I couldn’t have, up until MAX was activated?

A MAX package seems a bit of waste for me only being able to get up to 3MB?

So if I can get 2MB, guaranteed, that would be great

Any ideas?

Cheers,

SW.

No, unfortunately not.

Only way for you to get a fater speed is to go with Max and even then you can't be 100% sure what the speed will be till you try it.

Reason is the new Max services are rate-adaptive and adjust to get the best out of your line that they can.

The old service are not and either will sync or they won't, no adjustment.

Another update from ADSLguide:
The most critical piece of news is that most of the regrades occur over night, and it is best to have your ADSL modem turned off or disconnected from the line at this time if the BT Wholesale systems are to upgrade both the line and throughput speeds to a much faster level in the shortest possible timeframe.

...Just my luck :(

So I'm going to have to go for a MAX service then to get any speed increase? BT say I can get up to 3MB, so presumably I won't get any less than 1MB which I currently have?

I might give Pipex/BT a call to see what kind of speed I can 'realistically' expect to see

Thanks,

SW.

If your attenuation's out of spec for home2000, yes.

Anything's possible. Especially hard to say without stats (better still, graphed at regular intervals over 24 hours).

I might give Pipex/BT a call to see what kind of speed I can 'realistically' expect to see

Without moving, it's impossible to tell.

Yeah I'm currently getting 52dB Att. and SNR 15 - so slightly out of spec for 2MB as per BT's requirements :)

MAX it is then...

SW.
