I think people are looking at this the wrong way tbh. It's easy to say "Tories don't have a clue what they're doing" but I reckon this is actually a test to see how the apathetic public reacts, ready for far greater restrictions coming in the near future. They don't care about porn. It's entirely about control.
 
It is undoubtedly far too easy for kids to access very explicit material on the internet, I'm not sure this is going to stop them though.
 
I would say just go to the shop and buy what you want.

Government wants to restrict the internet as it not in keep with their media control, wee Billy no mates can voice his resentment and we can all read it, wait a minute! I kind of agree with what he is saying, Wee Billy no mates, now has lots of friends now all voicing their resentment. Government doesn't like that, very much like when Iran went on a winger about sky dishes back in the late 80s and early 90s.

Absolutely - if they genuinely were concerned about protecting minors there are a lot more things they could do. Unfortunately too many people are complacent and short sighted when it comes to these things and by the time they realise freedoms, etc. have been lost.

It's not even like they're doing a good job of being subtle about it.

MPs are standing up in the commons, on camera, and talking about anonymity being a bad thing; "What are we going to do about it?" Talking about encryption that they can't bypass being a bad thing. Talking about "bad journalism" being a bad thing.

Their ambition is plainly to control everything and they make no attempt to even hide that ambition. I think they're just safe in the knowledge that very few people seem to care. The media just want to sell advertising space and that does most definitely not include reporting on things that the masses aren't interested in. More likely to make a big deal about "Kate vs Meghan" than loss of freedoms.

No. As mentioned in the BBC article, sites which have less than a third of their content as porn will be exempt. That's why sites like Reddit will be fine, and the OcUK private forums of course. Luckily I got my access before the limit was raised.

Totalling the post in the porn subforum, it accounts for 93% of the traffic here. 5% "show us your kitty cats" and the rest mundane stuff like computers, cars and GD

Yes, it does. Although it's also possible that they finally realised that (a) it can't be made to work as advertised and (b) it will cost them votes. Politically, it's more effective in the short term to talk about doing it and blame someone else for not doing it. It'll take a bit more time and propaganda to make it a net vote-winner.

China has banned VPNs. The government of the UK would love to be as authoritarian as China. They boast about being world first in authoritarianism. To protect us, of course.

Most free porn sites make some amount of money and are therefore commercial. Mindgeek, which owns so much of the porn on the net that they're criticised as a de facto monopoly, has a revenue in the region of US$500M a year. It's most definitely commercial. But there are much smaller scales too. Say, for example, a couple of people make a porn site to show their home made porn of themselves because doing so appeals to them. If they make any money in any way, even if it's just a bit of money to partially cover costs, they're a commercial site.

An easy workaround is going to be fill 2/3 of the site up with randomly generated images :p
