Aero/Gains Thread

Got a 120mm -17 3T from Merlin this morning for £25 as they are just up the road :)

If I have gone too far then I’ll let you know!

Got my Oval Concepts stem and it fits! :D
Fitted last night and just done a pure guess at front end setup and rode the local 10 course today on it in 22:40.... That's 14 months since I rode a TT bike off no specific training with a brand new position. Windy slow day but only 266w for 22:40 whereas I done 21:30 on same course early last year off 312w (on even windier conditions mind you).

It has put my head in a good place, aero gains are here to be made now and the power will only come back.

Now I know how Chris Froome feels, sore neck from looking upwards with the new TT position!

I was flying, passed my minute & 2 minute man, running around 315-320w NP & then my body crashed and burned in the last 5 minutes. I’d estimate I was on for a low 21, but my legs totally packed in and I did a 21:46 which is still a PB on that course, knocking 5 seconds off my best (had to stop dead for a car then though!).

A late start, at 7:30; maybe I just didn’t eat enough before I left home as well as slightly different bike position, started to feel like I was getting a stitch and the tank felt totally empty riding home.

Soooo. 2 years on and I am almost back to speed. In that 2 years I've changed quite a bit, new front wheel and disc (zipp 808 fc and zipp super 9)new jockey wheels and cage. Di2. Mantis position aero coach saddle. Extra 20watts or so.

Net result. 2 seconds slower than my pb for 10..... With a 21:04 for 39th position

I bloody hate aero. I'm probably 1.5kg or so heavier, but position is good and narrow but probably bit higher which is my next step, although tonight was probably my last tt of this year so will have to wait and work on it over the coming months.

There's no maybe about it - when your legs just crumble like that it's almost always fuelling. :)
Yeah, I had the same build as most weeks, couple of slices of toast and a coffee about 4;45 so not sure why I went flat.

I take a bottle of SIS Go to hopefully give me some energy without having to eat loads of food.

Ride out the 20km or so to the race as a warm up, wait around 45 mins or so, 5km warm up again then TT.

So what have you changed that’s made you go backwards, can you work that out?

The wheels and extra power won’t have slowed you down!

Downloaded my data and my blow up wasn’t as bad as I thought, maybe a 15% drop in power worth 15-20 seconds. Would have seen me jump up 1 or 2 spots.

Probably won't buy for a while but I want to look to get a bigger chainring on my crankset, not sure what I can/can't get for it. Currently got 53-39 on there, I'm not huge power (285-290w for a 10). But I'm definitely a grinder usually averaging low to mid 80s cadence on any ride I do. Will probably look second hand initially especially now the season is wrapping up and people look to upgrade.

Crankset is Vision TriMax Carbon TT BB30

Can be worth it going bigger just to ride further up the block.

Of the few TT bikes I work on one has a 56t, one has a 55t and the other is a 54t Q ring I believe.

I rode last night and felt terrible, got all the excuses lined up.

I was running late so had to ride hard there.
I went too hard on Tuesday and overdid myself so was fatigued.
I had all my holiday vaccinations the day before and was under the weather and couldn’t push as hard.
The wind was omnidirectional.
Felt like I put too much air in my tyres and couldn’t ride the rough seal as easily, the vibration was fatiguing me and spoiling a smooth pedal.

I did a 22:13, power around the 300w mark so 5-10w down on what i have been running which isn’t bad considering some of the above excuses (that have some truth in them) may add up to those fractions of a %.

Never felt good for the whole time on the bike, probably should have taken the time off but I needed one more good scoring round & I think I have enough points to win the club series now.

This is definitely part of it, was down to smallest cog at the cassette (11t) on Tuesday and I usually grind away, just need to work out which cogs will fit my crankset.

On another slightly different note and not aero based but for turbo warm ups, pros have the cool suit/vest things, anyone seen where they're available from, or just make my own?
