*** Alien: Covenant ***

What including A v P ? :)

To be honest even though the first A v P wasnt from the DH comics as such they could have so easily gone into those stories in the next film by what happened at the end of A v P when the female character got the mark. She even looked like the same character from the comics.

Yeah, even AVP...although the dumbing down of the Aliens and the over powered predators really annoys me, both AVP movies were clearly made by gushing Predator fanboys.

Would love to see an adaption of the original AVP dark horse series, would prefer an adapation of AVP: Deadliest Of The Species though.

I preferred the Directors Cut of Alien 3 but thats probably because I read the book first.

DC of Alien 3 is a lot better, it's not a bad movie even in the vanilla format, it's just dis-jointed and cut to shreds so it makes little sense.

I just find it the dullest out of the 4. It's not even that the pacing is so off, it just never seems to crescendo into anything :/

I prefer it over Resurrection on the basis that it has the same lo-fi feel as the first two movies, it's dark, grimey, perhaps even distopian and it's a logical conclusion to the path Ripley is on. I don't get that feeling from Resurrection, I find it jarring each time I watch it and it doesn't have the feel of a proper Alien film if that makes sense.

If you haven't seen the DC I highly recommend it, changes the pacing somewhat and the middle act with the actual capture of the Alien is superb.

Dude, I'm fully aware that my opinions on 4 are pretty off beat xD

I agree with everything you said there! Absolutely! But it's exactly BECAUSE it's so confused that I love it. It treads this superbly surreal line between comedy and horror that I just find utterly compelling and intriguing.

I don't think I've ever watched anything but the DC. I dunno, it's a good movie and I'll happily watch it when a friend fancies a marathon watch. But I often skip over it when I'm doing my annual run through. I think it's probably got something to do with the fact I sessioned it as a kid. The others feel a little fresher perhaps?

Do you remember Golic freeing the Alien? If so, you've seen the DC, also does the Alien come out of a dog or an Ox? :)

The Director of AVP 1 (Antarctic) was a self confessed Alien fan and wanted to make an Alien movie, not a Predator one which he disliked (in his commentary), but the AVP franchise was the only way he could make an Alien film, which is why the Aliens were able to take down 2/3 of the Predators in 1v1 situations, which isn't canon to the series i.e. in the original set on Ryushi it still took 10+ aliens to take down a un-blooded Predator etc.

So in the original movie it was really the Aliens who were "overpowered" compared to the canon, especially with a single "Hero" Alien (criss-cross face) as the main Alien threat until the Queen pops out, rather than what the canon says is the Aliens sheer numbers being the biggest threat (not an individual "hero" Alien taking out individual Predators). Plus the film takes a giant crap on the Predator canon at the same time with 90% of it's guff.

I'm a massive fan of both Universes and the cross-over in novel/graphic novel forms is amazing but the film was just poor all round to both franchises.

Hate to say but you're right on all accounts, that single scene in AVP:R with the Predator holding two Aliens by the throat has got my judgement skewed, it's probably my most detested moment in a movie ever.

If you like audiobooks I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend the audio dramatisation Alien : Out of the Shadows. Its utterly fantastic, its like listening to an Alien film with brilliant acting and sfx. The story fills in what happens to Ripley between Alien and Aliens. The actress who plays Ripley sounds so much like Sigourney Weaver that I had to look her up to make sure it actually wasnt Weaver under a different name.

Thoroughly superb audio dramatisation. Make sure to get the audio dramatisation of it, not just the audiobook version.

I agree with this all totally. Listened to it while driving in the dark on a couple of long journeys. Really good and atmospheric.

But my opinion is slightly tarnished by the fact I really enjoy resurrection (but stop it with around 10 mins to go and the newborn -that's just ****)

Whether there's two eggs or one that contains a royal facehugger which carry a queen embryo, there's a few implausibilities in both versions; although the assembly cut does add more.

No doubt though, implausibilities aside, the assembly cut is far superior.
