*** Alien: Covenant ***

To answer the canon question, having looked into it, yes, it is canon

"The novels were written under the supervision of 20th Century Fox, and have been confirmed as part of the film series' canon"

Its the first part of a trilogy of novels.

Interestingly I enjoyed it without thinking it was canon, the fact that it is, is quite interesting given the storyline of out of shadows and that she was awake for some of that time adrift.

I was hovering over the buy button on those canon trilogy books starting with Out Of The Shadows when I saw...

psychic powers

...mentioned in a review for the 2nd book and thought:

Nope!

It seems the books are canon but not canon if you catch my drift, I can't really expand on that without spoiling the "story" but after reading the spoiler reviews on Amazon I'm not going to bother. It looks like the books are a bit woolly with regards the canon thing.

Shame. Let's hope Covenant is a decent movie.

Neoglo ignore that
the "psychic powers" are basically a partial explanation for how the aliens communicate, and why Ripley has the dreams, sort of a natural radio transceiver that some people can pick up faintly which triggers unease and if they've encountered the aliens close in, nightmares a bit like associating a smell with a memory

This is a proper spoiler for the third books from memory
the suggestion is that due to the level of interaction Ripley had with the Alien queens, they're tuned in to a degree to her direct bloodline, or have passed on some markers that let them identify it as a specific threat when encountered so if a drone runs in to Ripley or her family they can identify them by smell or something.

And a spoiler from the older books.
The transceiver operated on a radio frequency that humans only learned to detect late on and requires special equipment, but is identifiable and to a degree traceable so they can detect the rough direction of a strong enough signal, in one of the older books it's described how two competing alien queen types used it to scream challenges at each other, but only an android specifically designed to work in researching them had the receiver

The psychic powers are no ESP, telekinesis etc :)

That promo was dreadful... but it doesn't bother me that much. Scott and the rest of the team seem to be making the same mistakes they made with Prometheus, one of which being far too many cast members for any one of them to be memorable. The editing looks way too flustered as well. Undoubtedly a bi-product of there being way too many characters.

I'm sort of over it before it's even begun. You get these butt hurt fans who say Prometheus ruined the franchise or whatever, as if it hasn't been trash for decades

prometheus did not ruin the franchise, it has been poor for a long time, not sure why you should refer to them as butthurt fans when they were just pointing out their reasons for disliking it so much?

Alien/Aliens are really the only 2 fantastic films, with each release gradually dropping in quality. Covenant at least looks like a step in the right direction.

If you mean the 5 minute prologue, I agree wholeheartedly.

The xmas day teaser had me so hyped, the prologue killed that hype then the trailer last week rejuvenated it.

The franchise has been pretty poor since Resurrection, i'm in the minority that loves Alien 3 as much as Alien/Aliens. However that said, i'd rather have a mediocre Alien movie than no Alien movie.

Basically repeating exactly what I stated in your first line there... I specifically sighted those fans who claim the decline started with Prometheus, not those who generally think it's a turd (I count myself among that number).

I've said in this thread previously that I believe Resurrection to be up there with 1 and 2, with 3 bringing up the rear. It's so waywardly bizarre that I can't help but adore it.

Edit: Oh come on, how on earth can that word get starred out?!?

What including A v P ? :)

To be honest even though the first A v P wasnt from the DH comics as such they could have so easily gone into those stories in the next film by what happened at the end of A v P when the female character got the mark. She even looked like the same character from the comics.

I preferred the Directors Cut of Alien 3 but thats probably because I read the book first.
