Amd Price cuts

not possible KD not possible at all. When your talking about spending 400 men have to justify there expense and not feel like they mugged themselves off (or make others feel like they have)

These threads are painful so I think I'm going to call it a day and play some games :)

Until about ten minutes ago I really didn't think there was any one dumb enough to sell their 7970 and replace it with a 680.

Then I visited a forum I visit. And, clear as day "I am selling my 7970 because I ordered a 680 today".

Seems some one didn't read the reviews properly :D

This whole 28NM generation is a pile of fail. Not for the performance but the stupid pricing.

Hopefully,if the world is still around next year, I am going to get a card then.

I am going to probably spend my upgrade budget on a new CPU at this rate.

The GTX 680 is a great card... But not at £420. or £400.... or even £350. It should be sub £290. In a world where AMD released a faster card that would be its price.

But I still think when gk104 production ramps up at TSMC, NVIDIA would see the advantage in dropping prices and forcing AMD down with its more expensive chip.

+1 Am waiting on Trinity, If it fails i will buy an Ivy + motherboard and best price/performance GPU

The probelem is that the percentage gains from overclocking a 7970 are poor compared to other cards. A 20% OC may only equal 6-10% gain, and when Kepler is ~10% faster to begin with it may not be enough.

Perhaps the fact that overclocked 7870's come surprisingly close to 7950 performance indiactes there is a hidder bottleneck somehwere within Tahiti?

No that's wrong, that's actually more the case for the GTX 680.

How delicious would this card be if it were released at 7870 pricing. :D

Shame though, it got catapulted to the top with a top end price.

Stop with the bullcrap:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=701&catid=56&subid=938

The GTX 680 was only just launched today. Its current price is higher than it will be in a few weeks time.

The AMD defense team needs to find a corner to sit in and cry their hearts out over how unbelievably beat the red team is over the green team in this, and also both the last 5 or 6 generations of hardware :D

AMD defense team? personally I just buy whatevers best within my price range and couldn't give a toss who made it, especially at present as I'm not in the market for a new GFX card for atleast 6 weeks. Maybe you should look objectively at the facts instead of making such silly posts as it's quite clear that there's very little in it either way.

Facts:

-from initial benchmarks when both cards are overclocked there's <5% difference between them and depends a lot more on individual games.

-If you don't plan to OC then the 680's give much better gaming performance, if you do it's very close and one would need to decide themselves what features are more important.

-The price is undeniably in AMD's favour at PRESENT, it doesn't matter that the 680's just came out as Nvidia had the option of pricing them however they liked and we're yet to see AMD's response to that. Especially as they have a much greater possibility of lowering prices having been selling the 7970's at top whack for months already. Quoting prices from a single store is meaningless and smacks of desperations, I can easily find £500 680's which is just as meaningless. So far across the plethora of different retailers when you shop around 7970's are available £30-50 cheaper than 680's.

-7970's have more Vram (3gb to 2gb) which from my personal experience becomes much more important at high resolution/settings and also if you plan to keep a card for several years as games evolve and use more Vram in recent years. Try playing Skyrim or BF3 on a 512mb card then on a similar 1gb card and you'll see a clear difference such as the two versions of the 4870.

-The 680 has a lot of good features, particularly TSAA, it's fairly meaningless at present but when games developers take it up over the next year or two then it should give a nice performance boost over MSAA.

-The 7970's marginally better at computational tasks so may be more useful to proffessionals.

At the end of the day both cards have their positives and negatives and it's up to each prospective buyer to say what is most useful to them personally. Whats clear is that "how unbelievably beat the red team is over the green team in this" is a crock of s*** and you should be embarrassed by your post.

only because the 680 overclocks itself automatically, right?

Edit: (I agree with the rest of the post) red=green / green=red

Yes. And, the limits are very close to what they have clocked it at.

Best I have seen so far was a boost limit of 1215mhz. Anything more and the card froze.

Nvidia have had to push hard with it to make it do what it does "out of the box" which doesn't leave a lot of meat on the bone for those hoping to push it further.

Put simply when overclocked to the same clock speeds there is absolutely nothing in it AT ALL between the two cards.

So, let me see if i got this right; If you want the extra overhead on overclocking + compute power you go for HD7970 and if you want out of the box gaming with auto adjusting over-clock, you buy an GTX680 with overall the 7970 being generally faster when both overclocked

I suspect, not all GTX 680 are going to be as auto-clock-able as the cherry picked review ones.. suppose we will know by Fri/sat, what the sore is.

GTX 680 also supports 3D vision and Physx if you are interested in having those. Its also cooler, less power consumption, and less noise.

I have not looked at loads of reviews but the ones i have say its not cooler at load which matters the most. It uses a little less power and is a tad quieter, not anything worth writing home about.

I agree, but I just see both companies just not being OTT with the competition,so each can make a decent profit. For instance look at how the HD6950,HD6970,GTX560TI,GTX570 and GTX580 prices sort of plateaued for so long.

It's no wonder you spend most of your time outside of the hardware section of the forum because when you do post here it's mostly rubbish.

At equivalent clock speeds there isn't that much difference between the HD 7970 and GTX 680 so where you get "how unbelievably beat the red team is" I've no idea.

And fix your sig.

Unless I'm missing some significance the second date is wrong.

Some guy on christmas posted that he heard on the radio that bin laden died.

I'm going to be out with it. I'm glad things are so matched at the moment. It can only mean that someone is going to try to undercut someone else. And that is alright for me. I'm waiting for the upgrade post May. I think AMD will drop first.
