AMD Radeon R9 290X with Hawaii GPU pictured, has 512-bit 4GB Memory

Here is a question

If an R9 290X is about 37.5% more powerful than a HD 7970, will it really be able to catch a Titan using extreme settings and Hi Rez

Here is the table from the Heaven 4 1440p section,

The best HD 7970 here would have to be nearly 65% faster to catch the best Titan

We shall know in a few days!

Good point Kaap. I look forward to the 290X guys challenge. Pistols at dawn old chaps snarf snarf :D

I can't see it being £600 plus if you can get a 7990 for <£600.

It's nominal price is supposed to be about 500-550 (780 level). But add gouging and it could hit 600 quite easily. AMD wanted the 7990 back up between 600-700 so you can extrapolate from those two points.

Well when we were throwing around prices earlier he did say we would be "VERY pleased" with the price.

If it is £500 it makes my decision about buying it easy. I'm still not 100% I should bother upgrading yet.

This is all very convenient for the big two in GPU's. AMD release the 290x at £500+ then comes the 290 at say £450, in kind Nvidia drop the 780 to around the same price as the 290 and then release the 780ti slightly above the 290x. Status quo restored, how very boring.

I would personally rather get a cheap second hand 7970 if I find my current one struggling and wait it out until the new cards hit which isn't actually that long off.

That's understandable. I despise multi gpu setups myself, but only because I've experienced so many issues with them. I know the situation has much improved but I don't like regretting things I've purchased.

I am expecting around £400-£500, I bet that Danish price is nothing more than a place holder.

Remember AMD were first to market with 28nm, the 7970 dominated everything from Nvidia and it was £450 for a proper new gen.

Now AMD know the 7800ti is coming out I wonder if they will nerf the 290X untill after the 7800ti releases, then release a magic driver that boosts the performance by 10-15% like they did with the 7970
