I think I'll be waiting for non-reference 290X's and the GTX 780 Ti before I make a decision, hopefully the dust will have settled a little by then.

Would I be right in presuming the quiet/uber mode option is as much to keep within TDP as to tackle heat?

I'm guessing quiet mode for the reference card is that it would run at a lower base clock and lower fan speed; uber mode is probably higher base clock, but also higher fan speed/noise level.

IMO win or lose, both the 290X and 780Ti would most likely be within nose length of each other performance wise, however for the price, I serious cannot see Nvidia will match AMD's price level...they would most likely still charge their usual "Nvidia premium".

The Radeon R290X based on AMD’s new Hawaii chip and it should be selling later on the 24th in the US in etail and select retailers for $549 + tax, which sounds quite amazing for a card that can run faster than the Geforce GTX 780 and in Uber mode can even outrun the Titan selected games.

I take all these prices with a pinch of salt. Gibbo has already said they can alter prices just hours before launch. Supposedly less than 24 hours until the NDA lifts, so we shall soon find out.
