AMD Radeon R9 295X2 Owners Thread

Hello Everyone!

So I've got new build and put this beastly card I won in that killroy competition in and its SICK. It takes BF4 on ultra 140-180 fps on mantle, now sometimes on the other hand it gets HUGE frame drops to around 20 and this can happen several times, and it doesn't look like its triggered be levolution (obviously it happens either mid combat or while I'm diving on some fag tank with heli.), it gets quite annoying, anyone has any idea why ?
The card doesn't get over 65 degrees, I play on single 1080p/144hz.
I've got the beta 14.11.2 drivers, also on MSI afterburner it doesn't display fps/cpu temp/core usage in-game because of mantle, it works when switched to DX but than I get less fps (using perfowerlay.drawfps 1).

Thanks

Hey Smrtka,

Glad to see you're enjoying the card.

I have a couple of suggestions for you. Try closing your browser as the map is loading, that may help and could be causing the performance drops.

May i also suggest you place this config file in the BF4.exe folder, as it allows you to monitor video memory usage while playing. Keep an eye on it when the drops happen and see what the memory usage is and let me know.

Thanks. :)

AMDMatt what fan does the header on the card support? I hooked up a Corsair SP120 to it and it made an auidable "cricket noise" which wasn't present on the fan when hooked directly to the mainboard. I suspect it was down to the voltage supplied not being quite enough or maybe the amps? Or it simply didn't like the way the card did things. I read in the Corsair forums this happened with their fan controllers and there was some update to resolve it. So def seems voltage related.

Anyway, what's a good replacement fan? And how well does it scale in terms of RPM. I did some googling and it seems the included fan is 1700rpm max. I have attempted to find something of comparable amps and rpm but it's pretty much impossible.

It is indeed the CPU ! it was spiking over gpu few times and that's when the frame drop happened

Sorry for the bad image for some reason printscr screenshot and afterburner screenshots where not working....
And also the gpu is about centimeter above cpu on the graph when normal fps, I will test it on normal server to see.

Any suggestions ?

I need urgent help guys!! :(

I just got my Sapphire 295X2 today and would honor your opinion of this pic.

Hoses on barbs. Is it normal that the hoses are so far end of the barbs? Never seen this on any other Asetek things. I'm afraid it might leak someday as this thing runs hot as hell.

I tried to google some other 295X2s and saw this so I guess it could be OK?

Thanks a lot man, that eased my mind a bit. :) I tried to ask Sapphire, but they didn't even understand my question.

By the way, is it normal that my card is recognized only as 'R9 200 series' in device manager? Also I cannot enable/disable Crossfire anywhere in the CC. Is this normal? Crossfire is enabled and the card is working fine in Sleeping Dogs etc.

I used to have Ares III on water, which is basically a custom 295X2, and I could disable /enable CF manually from CC.

Edit. Seems like the CF thingy in CC is normal according to older posts.

From what I've seen in cc there is no explicit option so it looks like it enables it automatically, you can right click on cc icon on the bottom right select your monitor and then tick option show crossfire logo when in use or something like that and everytime you run a game using crossfire it will show like a watermark on top right corner.

The R9 200 shows the same in my case in heaven benchmark,
DM shows 2x R9 200 series too... This is not a fault tho... It is 200 series :-D

Matt I can confirm that i have the spikes in game as well, any ideas how to resolve this ?It looks like its CPU related:confused:

Hey Smrtka,

I looked at your screenshot above and whilst there is a bit of a spike, it does not look that bad.

Did you try closing down the browser while the map is loading? Have you updated punkbuster? Finally it might be worth trying to un-park your cpu cores 'core unparking' as some people have said this can help improve things.

Quick question, when fitting the rad for my 295x2 does it matter which way up it goes, is where the tubes come out of the rad, top/bottom or doesn't it matter?

The tubes should be at the bottom of the rad, and the lot should be mounted higher than the card. All this to prevent air bubbles from going where they could do the most harm.

The screenshot is not the clearest, I tried turning off the browser didn't seem to do any difference, when the fps drop occurs its CPU that's spiking for sure tho...
I will try unparking the cores see what that does.
Is it worth OC-ing the cpu ? I've got seidon watercooler on it...but it wouldn't make any sense why it spikes, if the clock is not enough it would do it all the time no ?
Confusing...

Also checked punkbuster and seems to be running without errors...not giving me options to look for update only uninstall or smth...

Google and download pbsetup, add bf4 then click update and make sure it updates to the latest version of punkbuster. Disable origin overlay too, if you haven't already.

Doh, I've got the rad above the card ok but I went for tubes at the top as it gave a better routing for the tubes rather than having them bunched up. Is that likely to give me problems in the long run then?

Hi.
I just bought my 295X2 and im planning on adding it to my custom wcooling.

What do u believe is the max safe voltage for this card in a custom waterloop?
Can it do +100mV ?

Well I've got mine installed and have been running some benches and playing with some overclocking and I've been pretty impressed so far. Got it running at 1075/1625 with a max temp of 72 after a couple of hours of Heaven Valley demo looping. Wonder if I can get the core much higher but I'm guessing I'll hit throttling temperature soon.

Done the PB update but have not tried yet, I will do a video so you can see when it happens,

On the other hand I've unparked the cores as this video shows
Still the same, maybe actually a bit more but that might be my imagination.

Any other suggestions ? also I've turned the browser off while playing all the time...

*also disabled origin in game from the day one.
