AMD Radeon R9 295X2 Owners Thread

I'm looking at buying the Sapphire R9 295x2, which at under £500 seems a pretty good price, to upgrade from 2 x 7950 CF for eyefinity.

A couple of questions, I have a Corsair TX850W PSU, which has 1 x 12v rail of 70A, will this be enough?

Other bits are an Oc'd i7 930, an SSD and HDD, soundcard.

Also, what are the dimensions of the Fan/Radiator combo, is it really 64mm deep? As its in an Antec 1200 case with one of those stupidly massive Noctua cpu coolers and there isn't 64mm of clearance from the rear vents and the edge of the cooler :(

So where would I locate the radiator?

I can part answer the question, that PSU will be sufficient. :)

Thanks :)

I'll probably buy it and figure out the rest then :p

But if anyone does know the answer/best place to mount it, the help would be appreciated! :)

You can mount it at the front or the rear of the case, either as intake or exhaust - assuming you have room of course.

Intake = Cooler core temps at the expense of higher vrm and cpu temps.
Exhaust = Warmer core temps but cooler vrm and cpu temps.

What do I need to connect to 3 DVI only monitors, do I use 1 x DVI and 2 x mDP->DVI adapter? Do they need to be active or is passive ok?

Can you link to a suitable product on here

Anything else I need to know about this card to make sure it works with my setup? :D

Good question, i will have to check for the answer on this. In the meantime perhaps an Eyefinity user might be able to contribute an answer.

Well, I googled around a bit and found this on Tomshardware

Unfortunately it's pretty hard to get a straight answer to these questions, but it seems that while they improved things with the R9 290/290X/295X, it's still problematic.

Basically you can have a maximum of 3 monitors connected via DVI or HDMI. Every monitor beyond 3 must be connected either via:
a) Displayport to Displayport (can be either mini DP or full DP, doesn't matter, as long as BOTH card and monitor connected via Displayport)

OR

b) ACTIVE displayport to HDMI or DVI adapters. The ACTIVE bit is critical as cheaper passive adapters just won't work.

To be clear, the passive adapters will work on the first 3 screens, but as soon as you want to connected a 4th and 5th screen, each one must be connected via native DP or via an ACTIVE DP adapter.

None of your monitors accept displayport inputs?

If not, grab something like this for your 4th display: ...

The first three should continue to work on native DVI and your current (passive) adapters.

If anyone can confirm this is correct, would be nice to order the correct items first time :)

Matt got a question of similar kind, I have some smaller 17" screens hanging around with Dvi ports, can i put them next to my main and have them on top of each other as a continual screen ?
Also you posted a list of compatible display ports here on this thread but I cant find it....do you have it somewhere ?

1 DVI + 2x mDP -> DVI would work with passive adapters.
But the only drawback of using passive adapter is that if you have a Dual Link display, the max resolution on Dual Link display will be lower from 25x16 to 16x12 with the use of passive dongle. (This shouldn't affect 1080p DVI display, native resolution should retain using passive dongle)

Here’s a picture of the passive adapter part number for reference.

Thanks mate, this is the scenario I would like to get to is it possible ?

Yes, but not in Eyefinity. The displays will need to all be in Extended Mode.

Does that mean that if I move mouse to top right corner will it come from left on top monitor or from the top ?

What is the impact in gaming ?
Its more for me being able to watch stuff while I play and so on...

Also my main monitor is 144hz...does that effect anything ?

If you didn't rotate the side displays and move the mouse across the top right corner of the left display, it should appear from the left side of the upper right monitor.

.

Thanks for checking into that, I went with an active adapter in the end for future proofing if I update my monitors, thinking about one of those UHD widescreen later in the year.

The 295x2 will support DirectX 12. :)

Ohh, that's a brucey bonus! As I was a little reticent about spending £500 on something that was going to be out of date as soon as DX12 was released :p

Just found an article and I guess it will run DX12, getting the benefits of the optimised API, but maybe not all the features?

Even if so, that's good enough for me :)

I may be late to the party, but omg, this card is amazing!

Just installed it this morning, had a test with Tomb Raider, Far Cry 3 and some others, full Ultra settings on 5760x1080 and it doesn't even break a sweat! :D

Sitting pretty at 61*c so it's sooo much quieter than the racket my 2 x 7950's made with 100% fan speeds :p

I have one issue though, hell, nothing is ever straightforward when upgrading/replacing parts. I share 2 of the 3 monitors with another pc via KVM switches and initially only 2 monitors displayed a picture, even though all 3 were active in the settings. Then it came on and off erratically, and was slightly distorted.

It seems this Aten KVM switch isn't passing the signal through properly from the active mDP to DVI adapter....so I'm going to try a passive adapter or have to come up with a whole new solution on how to share the monitors with my work pc.
