AMD RX 7900 XT/XTX Upgrade discussion

Gonna try and grab an XTX for my boys Christmas present. He saved birthdays and christmas for an Nvidia 3070 a couple years back, didnt buy it, and has been holding his money ever since. We are gonna put half towards it. I undertsand its the Saphire models that will be in stock at 2pm. Is it the XTX nitro or XTX pulse or XTX gaming? Or will they all be in stock? If so, which is recommended?
A bit mean to your kids. they will be thoroughly disappointed not getting a 4080 and will get mocked at school

I had at one point had a Vega64 running on the 2500K overclocked to 4.6GHz and it was bottlenecking significantly (bottlenecked minimum frame rate by up to over 50%) when gaming on my TV at 1080p at 120Hz.

The 7900XTX is around 2.5x to 3x the performance of the Vega64...you gonna have a huge bottleneck if you not building a new PC to go with your new card!

I actually have the Samsung S23A700 myself (which has long retired to my mother's PC), and to get 120Hz you cannot use the monitor's HDMI port (that's limited to 60Hz), you MUST use the DVI-D port on the monitor.

You would have to try too find dual-link cable that has DVI-D (Dual Link) 24+1 Pins on one end and HDMI on the other end.
I have since upgraded my pc, don't worry! Yeah, I've been looking (https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/how-to-connect-to-a-120-hz-display.3268285/#post-20043088) and I'd have to faff around with buying an active adaptor of some kind which are £50-100+. I think I'm due a slight resolution upgrade at this point :D.

100 xtx
100 xt
He said they had 1000 Sapphire MBA XTX cards.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you are mis-remembering or missed a zero out by mistake....

Many moons ago some of us here managed to find a HDMI to Dual-link DVI Cable that costed only around £4 off the rainforest that would work 120Hz for the Samsung S23A700.

Though not sure if or which or any of those cables that are now sold on rainforest can support 120Hz Samsung S23A700.

Oh really? Wow, might have to search the forums for that. Would you have posted about it here?

No way was that 1000 cards. The man is a salesman...

Don't believe everything you read.

If that was the case, he would under-report the quantity to drive people to order (especially those thinking about it). A lot of people were caught out thinking they would have time to mull it over and missed out.

So some twitter expert has suggested that there are some problems with the RDNA 3 chips which results in them only being able to deliver 5/6ths of their potential performance. I won't pretend I fully understand the problem but potentially it means there's quite bit of untapped potential left in the tank for those who are buying the XTX model. That probably won't fully solve the Ray Tracing gap due to the chips lack of RT cores but could substantially narrow the performance delta on the RTX 4090.

The 6xxx series had big improvements as drivers matured I expect no difference this time round.

I am very tempted by a 7900XTX, but I'm getting very impatient (as I need a whole new PC and want to get it done). Would prefer a 3rd party cooler though, wasn't impressed by the reference ones based on the reviews. Not sure if I can wait for the 3rd party 7900XTXs to come in stock, might have to bite the bullet and get a 4090...

After learning I'll be receiving a very decent bonus from work I was all set to jump on one of these but I'm holding off as the results are just a bit too inconsistent for the price. I'm happy to wait and see whether drivers improve things, or the price drops in the coming months.

Wait for that and the potential AIB versions that squeeze in case some more performance on the table.
