AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D retail processor has been tested ahead of launch

Agreed completely, at this price point I expected a 5900x 3d. The 5800x3d competes with a 12700f (locked / no igpu) and besides some low resolution gaming it loses to everything else while also costing 50% more. Lol
 
How many reviewers will test fastest DDR5 on ADL then test some mid range 3600c16 that is less than half price on AMD instead of 3800c14/4000c14.

DDR5 is price prohibitive for most people - 2x16 of 3600 cl16 ddr4 is under £99 whereas 2x16 of 6400 ddr4 is nearly £450!!

12700f/k with DDR4 is much better value than both, agreed. Also much greater performance in almost all other software compared to the 5800X3D.

Still, it would be nice to see benchmarks using the best available components for each system IMO.

Tuned vs tuned will be interesting and maybe the 12900K and 12700K can eek out a few wins but the cost difference even for a 12700K rig will be high due to DDR5 cost.

£375 for the 12700KF saves about £50 vs the 5800X3D but motherboard cost differences wipe out that saving and the memory required to catch up costs an extea £200. If you want the productivity performance it can be worth it but for a gaming rig 1st productivity 2nd at best there is a case for the 5800X3D even for new builders.

For upgraders like me though there is no comparison because this is the cheapest way to this level of performance and considering the games it does well in so far it looks like it will be a good match for games I play (still more guess work there than I would like though).

So be fair, extreme DDR4 kits are hard to get. Check OCUK - plenty of 6400Mhz DDR5 in stock (C40 kits with Hynix, that do tighter timings), whereas not a single DDR4 kit with 3800C14/4000C14.

I'd like to see both the fastest commonly available DDR5 kit used on the 12900K/KS and the fastest DDR4 kit used on the 5800X3D though, hopefully someone actually reviews and tests it.

Just use DDR4 on 12700KF and save ££, while having far greater overall performance.

So pay the same amount of money all in (CPU + RAM + MOBO) for less gaming performance? I mean if you do any productivity then sure go for the 12700KF but if you don't care about that and you want maximum gaming performance the AMD rig will be faster with better lows. I mean look at the lows in some of those games. Often 10% + ahead with wins of over 30% in places even when the averages tie. Makes for a much much smoother gaming experience.

So I can keep it for 5+ years and not worry about getting 7700K'd.

Who mentioned the cpu? Only you. I disagree on value, as ddr5 of all types is triple the cost of dd4.
 
Forr pure gaming performance those are excellent results for far less money than a 12900K, regardless of whether the i9 would look better with DDR5 as the cost comparison would end up so much worse in that instance.

The price isn't great compared to AMD's own lineup, or the 12700K, but it's objective is to claw back gaming parity with the 12900K and it seems to have done that. Sure it can't compete in productivity but then it's 20% cheaper. And the KS looks even more ridiculous at it's price point.
 
I still think the 12700f wins on everything. Price / multithreaded / single threaded. It loses to 240p gaming but it costs way less and its on a socket with feature upgradability.

Only to RPL as far as we know. Better to wait for either AM5 or MTL if wanting future upgrades. Gives time for DDR5 to become reasonably priced as well.

I dont know, the 5800x 3d reminds me of a worse version of the 7700k. And i say worse cause at least the 7700k was winning on single threaded performance, not just games. The 5800x3d loses on everything (horribly on some occasions) in both mt and st and only wins on games, while being insanely expensive. At 300-350 euros it would be a good deal, at 450 i just have to laugh it out of the room

Eh, maybe because it’s being released solely for gaming. Anyone buying this chip will surely know that.

I was talking purely about future upgrades, didn't mention the 5800x3D because I'm not very interested in it, it's too close to Zen 4. But for those that don't want to change boards.. well, it's at least an option.

Exactly. Gamers for whom money is no object buy the likes of the 12900KS for gaming alone so something like the X3D targets a similar market, just at a far lower price point. Will make a good CPU for gamers currently using a 2000 or 3000 series Ryzen to help them eke out their AM4 board a little longer.
