AMD Zen 2 (Ryzen 3000) - *** NO COMPETITOR HINTING ***

I've just had Agesa 1004B Bios update, my clocks are no higher, all core was down to 4050MHz from 4.1, Cinebench scores 1 point lower, yes 1, temperatures however are 13 degrees lower at load, it appears core voltage is now lower.

A random article why Oracle cloud is better than AWS (Apparently)

I found it funny that they are suggesting one of the advantages is the use of 'Non Intel CPU' :p

Particularly this image:

AMD Zen 4000 APUs look great even in a budget 1.2kg ultraportable:
https://www.anandtech.com/show/1576...314-review-swift-gets-swifter-with-ryzen-4000

Anandtech was comparing with larger and more expensive Intel laptops too,ie,15" screens and weigh 1.6kg which is much more.

Yeah looks great for the price. I just hope the 15" Lenovo Ideapad I've preordered for the mother in law has slightly more capable cooling, it's also a relatively thin and light. Initial feedback says yes but that's not as thorough as the likes of Anandtech; as ideally I want to set it firing on full 25W performance mode or at least have it running consistently on 15W mode. I ordered the 4800U so slightly more powerful integrated graphics also, should be more than enough for her needs when combined with a 70kWH battery and should last her a good few years if it doesn't die or get smashed! :)

Anandtech are being a bit unfair as it's a 1.2KG laptop and then proceeded to only use the Intel equivalent XPS13 for some tests. The rest of the tests were with bigger laptops!

Who wants the 3300X when you can have a 3600 for £140. R3s should be under £100.

The segments are different. Also not sure where £140 comes from but am seeing £155 prices as lowest at moment anyways and it's still £170 here.

The price at £115 for the 3300x then is around £40 cheaper which when looking at low budget stuff that's a big chunk different.

So where does this leave the MSI max boards then?

So the Maxs will be supported but non Max board aka vanilla B450 and x470 no Ryzen 4000!:eek:

There are quite a few B450 and X470 motherboards which had 32MB BIOS chips, not only the MSI MAX series motherboards. But did you know lots of X570 motherboards have 16MB BIOS chips, like the non-MAX MSI B450 motherboards:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/c1dnu3/x570x470x370b450b350a320_am4socket_motherboards/

Quite a few Gigabyte X570 motherboards in that list. So 16MB is enough for at least Zen2 and Zen3 compatibility. I personally think AMD CBA with the "older" motherboards now.

Well that IS very bad. From the out set AM4 was marketed as having 4 gens of CPU compatibility. Very naughty for AMD to go against that now.

There might be a technical reason for it. Which we will know about in the future.

What about the MSI Maxs? Just a few months ago people where saying they better buy was the B450 Tomahawk Max over the X570 Elite. I choose the x570 to be safe as well as PCI-E 4 support.

My Asus B450I Strix from 2018 has a 32MB BIOS,and a true 6+1 phase VRM,but it apparently isn't good enough. Good thing I bought it in the heady Zen+ days - more recent 2019/2020 AM4 converts have a one CPU motherboard. I feel really bad for them. AMD's official response is this:
https://www.techpowerup.com/266710/...r-zen-3-older-am4-motherboards-not-compatible

The AMD B550 currently only supports 3rd generation Ryzen "Matisse" processors. Ryzen 3000 "Picasso" APU are not supported. What's more, older Ryzen 2000 "Pinnacle Ridge," "Raven Ridge," and first gen Ryzen 1000 "Summit Ridge" aren't supported, either. The Athlon 200 and 3000 "Zen" based chips miss out, too. AMD argues that it ran into ROM size limitations when trying to cram AGESA microcode for all the older processors. We find that hard to believe because B450 motherboards with the latest ComboAM4 AGESA support 2nd gen and 3rd gen processors, including APUs and Athlon SKUs based on the two.

They said BIOS ROM limitations, but with many X570 motherboards like your one are 16MB,like many of the B450/X470 motherboards, but your motherboard is fine. But there are many B450/X470 motherboards(MSI MAX) with 32mb BIOS chips like the more expensive X570 motherboards. They are not supported, and where launched after Zen2 were released.

MSI also does BIOS flashback...they don't need a CPU.

OEMs are saying something different:
https://hexus.net/tech/news/mainboard/141661-xmg-amd-ryzen-4000-vermeer-cpus-will-compatible-b450/

They make desktop replacement laptops and desktops,so something is amiss,if they say its doable. Reminds of Asus telling people Z170/Z270 motherboards were fine with CFL.

Can't support everything forever :)

You mean one generation of CPU for a lot of buyers. The mainstream chipset for Zen2 was the B450 - most Zen2 owners have a B450 motherboard as AMD CBA to get the B550 out. That includes almost all prebuilt PCs(many from OcUK too AFAIK) and desktop replacement gaming laptops.Basically it's taken them nearly 12 months to get the B550 out,as Zen2 launched last July, and B550 is out the second half of June.

People moan at Intel, but even they don't that long to release their whole chipset range! If they had the B550 out last year, this wouldn't be a problem!
