*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

Ok your probably not going to like this, but send that 1800x back and get the 1700, it seems the 1700x and 1800x being leakier parts are around 20c on average hotter than the 1700 even when OC'd :( as 8Pack has said, they are designed for high cooling, if your going custom water loop you may find it reasonable, but i can also imagine, if your worried about temps, you probably wont be impressed by the temps of that CPU.

Not worried about temps as such just rad volume, i have so many rads from my full custom build years back and i managed to keep two 7990's under good temps. It's just do i go with a 240 push pull or stick in another 240 along with it.

I should have worded my OCD better, i actually like the challenge of keeping things cool that are known to get hot.

Did 8pack give any temps when he mentioned the 240AIO ?

Ive given up reading through more than 2 pages of this thread at a time because it moves so quick :)

Looking at the comparisons between the 7700k and the 1700, one thing is for sure, we have competition :) each is better at different things, so we have choices to make. Which I think is pretty positive, hopefully it lasts a long time and we won't simply be making our CPU choice based solely on budget :)

Indeed competition is good for us as consumers.

The 1800x is a pretty toasty chip to be fair, it was hitting 82c whilst being cooled by a pretty decent 240mm AIO in one review.

thanks mate, ive been trying to find reviews with over clocked temps but struggling, I think i will stick in another 240.... What's the worst that can happen :)

Brave man! :) personally i woulda gone with the 1700, its a lot cooler and with your setup you would probably easily achieve 4ghz stable at a really nice temp! and it would have saved a few quid in the process :)

I got told the same when i crossfired two 7990's :) I loved that custom build, apart from the electricity bill :D

It was running within specs anyway.

Also, that was under 100% load. I didn't manage to catch what the temps would be like in regular usage scenarios, but it will be considerably lower I should imagine.

Oh and another point is, more GHZ does not always equal more fps....

On mainstream reviewers slides RyZen looks bad, side by side recordings of in-game footage it still isn't as fast as the 7700K but the gap between them isn't anything like as drastic as those reviewers who only use numbers on slides.

coincidence?

Don't have all the time in the world but i want to spend some time today doing clock for clock comparison 3000MHz ram and 4.0 GHz cpu (1700 vs 1700x vs 1800x)

So hopefully i can present you all some data later on RE temps voltages and performance differences if any :)

Yeah I'm not sure what to believe in terms of game performance right now. Reviews are all over the place on this. Some show no difference in FPS compared with Kaby Lake, some show a large difference. Some show great frame time stability.

I think it just depends which reviewers have had there pockets lined by intel
